Picture Retake day October, Friday 21st
Important Information:
After school help sessions and activities began Sept. 6th. At least one teacher from Willow will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00. A list of other after school opportunities can be found here.
T-Shirts Are Coming!
We'll be ordering Team Willow shirts this year! Shirts will be approximately $8, and we would like to have shirts ordered by the end of parent-teacher conferences. Here's a mockup of the design we're looking at:

English –
This week, we spent time setting our reading page goals and dipping our toes into exploring new ways to respond to reading. To get a better idea of our journey, check out this week's post on my blog, linked below!

Social Studies –
This week in
Social Studies, students have been wrapping up their time in PreHistory. We have been refreshing some basics of
geography as well as identifying the locations of prehistoric villages and
early fossils. We examined some
artifacts of prehistoric societies and formed hypotheses regarding their
possible meaning and functions. On
Thursday, we brainstormed reasons why the first civilizations formed in or near
river valleys and began looking at the transformation from a nomad lifestyle to
farming – otherwise known as the Neolithic Revolution.
Next week,
we will have a quick vocabulary test on Tuesday.
Students have had a vocabulary activity which serves as their study
guide. We will also begin our
examination of Mesopotamia. The notes are located on my website in the Resources section, if students would like to begin looking ahead of time.

Math-
We finished up with learning target 3 this week and will be taking a summative over learning targets 1-3. Please review order of operations, adding/subtracting integers, and multiplying and dividing integers with your student for Tuesday. Check out my blog for some of the great things we've been doing in class.
Algebra took a test over chapter 1 today and will begin chapter 2 next week!
I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter).

Science –
Willow Science
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
- In science, why do you always graph the mean?
- How many trials should you do?
- Is it better to have more or less trials and why?
- What airplane design flew the farthest?
- Why did it fly the farthest?
The targets this week have been:
- I able able demonstrate and show the research process skills.
- I able able to describe and perform the engineering process.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- “Systems & System Models”: Defining the system under study - specifying its boundaries and making explicit a model of that system - provides tools for understanding and testing ideas that are applicable throughout science and engineering.
- “Cause & Effect”: Mechanism and explanation. Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts.
The two habits of mind we were developing are
16. Learning Continuously
Intelligent people:
- are in continuous learning mode:
- striving for improvement, alway growing, always learning, always modifying, improving themselves
- perceive and approach: problems, situations, tensions, conflicts, circumstances, and failures as valuable opportunities to learn
- continually become aware of what they don’t know
6. Striving for Accuracy & Precision
Intelligent people:
- Value accuracy, precision, & craftsmanship and take time to check over their products or performance
- Review rules set out for the task or performance
- Review models, visions, & criteria they are to follow
- Confirm the finished product or performance matches the criteria
- Take pride in their work & strive to attain the highest possible standards & pursue ongoing learning.
Activities students participated in this week:
- Tuesday students completed “About Me” sheet to share about themselves. About Me
- Wednesday: Students should have finished data collection for their Paper Airplane Engineering Lab.
- Thursday: Class discussion and notes for graphing concepts, data tables, graphing, and research terms.
- Friday: Chromebook distribution, School picture taking, finishing notes, and working with their lab groups on making their graphs and filling in their lab reports.
- Their goal is to fly over an average of 875 cm. If you would like to see the lesson follow this link: Paper Airplane Engineering Project
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
- }The independent variable is intentionally changed by the engineer/researcher.
- }The dependent variable – “depends… whatever is being measured!” – measured to see if it changing and how?
- }Constants are those things which stays the same during every trial of the experiment.

NEXT WEEK the students will complete their paper airplane engineering lab report, outline the engineering processes, and graphing principles.
