********************************************************************
From Dr. Smith:

Please remind students of the following regarding dismissal at the end of the day:

1) students should leave for home, their ride, or a bus at 3:15

2). On after school activity days: If students are participating, they must be in their activity room by 3:20 and should leave for home, their ride, or a bus at 4:00

3). Students are encouraged to walk to the Rec center if their transportation home is not on time and be picked up at the Rec.

We cannot have students unsupervised throughout the building in the late afternoons. It is a critical safety and security issue and student safety comes first.

On Mondays and Fridays students should be picked up by 3:35

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays students should be picked up by 4:10

**************************************************************

Summer school enrollment can be completed here.

At least one teacher from Dynamic will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00.

English –
Students did a great job this week at looking at two "hot topics" and exploring gathering evidence for both sides of the issue. We'll wrap up our last hot topic next week (is technology helping or harming our society?) on Monday.

Argumentative Unit Assessment (Summative Grade)
On Tuesday, students will be presented with an article that corresponds with a pro/con topic that they selected today in class. All article choices present both sides of the issue. Topics include:

  • The media's coverage of NFL issues
  • The popularity of the World Cup
  • Self-driving cars
  • E-cigarette use
  • Recycling programs
  • School lunch programs
  • Online gambling regulations
  • Apple's choice to not aid the FBI in hacking the San Bernadino shooter's phone

Whiel reading, they will put into practice all of the skills they've learned during this unit:

  • reading articles on both sides of an issue critically
  • gathering evidence (statistical/factual, anecdotal and expert opinion)
  • figuring out what the evidence means (what's being said?)
  • asking what the evidence leaves out or neglects to mention (what's NOT being said?)

They will take this information that they've gathered and analyze and, on Wednesday, they will write an argumentative piece that asserts which side of the issue made a better argument. They will support this assertion with pieces of evidence from the pieces and explain why the evidence/argument was weak or strong. The students' work on Tuesday and Wednesday will be a summative grade.

On Thursday, we will start our final unit of the year: a whole-class read of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, a personal favorite of mine. It's a very relaxed unit and a nice way to end out 7th grade!

Social Studies –

This week we began with a group activity about the barbarian invasions.  Although the common historical focus is on the destruction caused by these invasions, the groups called “barbarians” by the Romans actually made several important contributions to the world – including pants.  At the end of the week, students began working on several activities for Chapter 2; a Geo Challenge, a Vocabulary Activity, and Reading Notes 2.  These are all due on Tuesday.

The notes for this unit are already up on my website, and I encourage students to begin looking at them right away.

Happy Friday Dynamic Team!

Upcoming Events:   April 20th – 7th Grade Band Concert, 6:30 p.m
April 22nd – Hats for Heart

DYNAMIC is to be CONTINUOUSLY PRODUCTIVE AND CONTINUOUSLY LEARNING!

Important Information:

Hats for Heart Information can be found here.  This is a fundraiser for The American Heart Association.  Students may wear hats to school for the day with a small donation.  Other items are also available with a donation.

Summer school enrollment can be completed here.

MAP retakes begin next week.  If your child was absent during the initial tests, they will be pulled at some point during the week for make-ups.

At least one teacher from Dynamic will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00.

English –
Argumentative Writing:
Students have really dived into our first argumentative debate: are competitive sports helpful or harmful? We spent time looking at many different resources (articles, infographics, NPR audio and videos) for evidence for both sides. Students were encouraged to "suspend judgement" and let their evidence guide which position they took for our first debate. We finished the week with a "flash draft" that allowed them to take their debate moves to paper.
We will continue exploring more "hot topics" next week. Students will continue to pull evidence, organize it and cite it, as well as work on establishing claims and supporting reasons.
Reading Goal:
A summative READING GOAL grade will be entered into the gradebook at the end of next week. To achieve a 3 (90%), students need to have met their page goal as well as conference with me. Students who do not conference with me or who do not meet their page goal will see a lower grade.
Reading Conference Details:
Students had the opportunity to sign up for a conference time at the end of March (conference times are held before school, during lunch, during Discovery or after school). Students were informed that, if they missed their scheduled date, they would need to reschedule with me. Conferences take around 7-10 minutes, and students need to bring their book and have read at least 50 pages in the book. Ask your student about his/her conference!

Math-

Last week 7th grade math took their summative on Expressions and Equations. MAP testing this week hasn't  allowed a lot of time but we did talk about inequalities, how to read them,  and what they look like represented on a number line. We also spent a little time looking at calories, how they determine calories and what does the daily 2,000 calories really look like. We will be starting our probability unit next!

Social Studies –

Since we have been MAP testing this week, we have eased into the medieval period with a medieval murder mystery.  This serves two purposes; first, as a brain refresher, and second to sneak in some important information.  Students were able to see the siege of a castle, experience a slice of life in a medieval monastery, and witness a trial by combat.

Next week, we will begin with a group activity about the barbarian invasions, and then move to the important geographical influences of the medieval period in Europe.  The primary focus of our discussion towards the end of the week will be the rise of feudalism.

The notes for this unit are already up on my website, and I encourage students to begin looking at them right away.

English –

This week: We finished up our spring break snapshots and started our argumentative writing unit with some crime scene investigations! Ask your students whether or not "Queenie" is trustworthy!

Revision Opportunity: students were briefed on the steps they needed to take if they wish to revise their informational writing post-assessment (a summative grade) for a higher grade. They need to:

1. Conference with me (I'm available before school, during lunch and after school) about planned changes.
2. Make the planned changes on their Google Doc (they should make a copy of the original so that I can compare the two).
3. Leave a Google Doc comment noting the changes that were made and the score they feel these changes merit.
4. Send me an email (kraushaar.katie@wgcloud.org) to let me know to regrade!
That's it, and I told the students that everyone who revises will see an improved grade with changes!

Math-
We have moved onto multi-step equations this week. There has been some great interest with solving equations and wanting to work through more problems which has been great! We will work on more multi-step equations and word problems next week and will be assessing soon.

Social Studies –

We have continued working on Ancient Rome this week.  Students began to look at the governmental structures of the Roman Republic and comparing them with the government in the United States.  We will be looking at the change from republic to empire – Why would people willingly give up self-determination?  Next week we will continue with Rome.
