Math-

The Dynamic students have worked really hard  this year and I feel that they will be ready to take the math portion of the MAP test in two weeks. Students will be allowed to use a calculator on a portion of the MAP test, but I only have a classroom set of calculator which isn't enough for the team, because everyone will take the test at the same time.  I highly recommend that each student bring a calculator to school Monday and leave it here for the test (dollar store calculator is fine).

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students did the pretest, What Do You Know about the Circulatory and Respiratory Systems, setting up vocabulary templates, vocabulary tracking, goal tracking, textbook reading, note-taking, video segment notes, and answering questions about the circulatory and respiratory system. Most of the students are feeling there are lots of parts to the heart and are working to be able to describe the path of the blood. The concept of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is coming into their vocabulary!

The students received the results of their Weather Unit goal #1 test and those scores will be posted on the portal this weekend. Please ask you child about what they learned about weather.

This unit will prepare them for the Dynamic field trip to the Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education Lab at St. Louis University to participate in the ADVENTURES IN MEDICINE and SCIENCE (AIMS) program to do a pig heart dissection. This is a top notch, state of the art dissection lab! The students will also see a comparison of a healthy human heart compared to a diseased human heart. There are 3 permission slips required for this field trip; one for Webster Groves School District and two for St. Louis University Practical Anatomy Lab which were due today, Friday, 28 March. Below are the links to those permission slips.

Some of the students had homework this weekend to finish answering questions over their textbook research.

Social Studies –

We began the week with a great class discussion about the functions of governments.  I asked students to imagine what would happen if our government just left.  This is what happened to former Roman colonies at the beginning of the Dark Ages.  It led to an entirely new social structure called Feudalism.  We have also spent time this week with the geography of the region.  Next week we will further explore the early middle ages with a particular emphasis on the emerging social structures and the beginnings of nation states.

This week students were again practicing their summary writing skills which demands comprehension of the reading text-- "A Mason-Dixon Memory." Already I've noticed marked improvement since the last summary writing activity.

Alongside summary writing, students are studying selected words. While reading the story, students tracked unfamiliar words in the text. The top five words were analyzed so that students will own these words. There will be a quiz over the words after spring break.

On Monday, students visited the Hixson Book Fair and graded/discussed their responses to their questions about the current reading.

After break, student will be doing some creative writing inspired by posters of the Civil Rights Era.

Science –
In Dynamic Science this week the students finished up the weather concepts: factors which affect climate, and weather associated with cold, warm, and stationary fronts. The Weather Unit Summative Test is next Wednesday, 12 March 2014. Their Weather Unit study guide was shared with the students on Thursday morning. The students are expected to complete their study before class on Monday.

We have covered the following concepts so far this semester:
1.    Kinetic temperature theory with the 3 temperature scales Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin, including absolute zero.
2.    Density of air and air pressure.
3.    Properties of cold and hot air masses.
4.    Weather caused by the center of a low pressure and weather caused by the center of a high pressure.
5.    The Direction of winds around a low or high pressure centers.
6.    The three states of matter (solid, liquid, & gas) and the freezing/melting & boiling/condensation transition zones.
7.    The 3 ways of heat energy is transferred: convection, conduction, and radiation.
8.    Heat energy moves up and from hot towards cold.
9.    Winds blow away from the high pressure and towards the low pressure.
10.  Interpreting weather station plots.
11.  Understanding cold fronts, warm fronts, and stationary fronts.
12.  Understanding the how rain, sleet, hail, snow, and freezing rain are formed.
13.  Specific heat capacity of different materials.
14.  Factors which influence climate.
15.  How “sea breezes” affect coastal climates.
16.  Weather associated with cold, warm, and stationary fronts.

If you have any questions or comments please let me know.

Social Studies –

Although it seems as if the weather is fighting against us this year, we are proceeding with our look at the Roman Empire.  On Wednesday and Thursday we spent some time looking at the differing roles of women in the Empire.  I passed out the study guide on Friday for the test on 3/13, although it was available online from Tuesday forward.  The notes are also available online.  We wrap up The Classical World Unit next week.  When we return from Spring Break, we will begin The Middle Ages.
