ELA –

This week, we wrapped up our first unit, Launching the Reading Workshop. Students wrote me a letter reflecting on how they have grown as a reader so far this school year. This is a summative grade. I'm looking forward to reading their letters!

Next week, we'll start our first writing-heavy unit: writing realistic fiction! I love this unit because it allows me to really get to know my writers and their unique ideas. We'll be generating story ideas and setting goals for our stories. I'll be writing alongside them, and I can't wait to learn from them.

Social Studies

This week, we spent several days working through a webquest based in the Mesopotamia section of The British Museum. Students explored the history of the region as well as the archaeology involved in understanding it. Next week we will spend some time going over the notes with an open-note quiz on Friday. After that, we will move on to Egypt.

Information and assignments for my class can all be found on my website.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Math-

All Math- Most students sent me their picture collage and they are hanging up in the room to represent our diverse students. We will use one from each class each week to try to guess which classmate it belongs to. I am still missing some, please check with your student that they submitted it me so, it can be printed.

****I will allow reassessments this following week but they HAVE to be completed by Wednesday before we take our next summative. They will only be allowed to reassess for 90% of the points.

Students took their first summative last week on Learning Targets 1-4.  The grades were posted on the portal earlier this week.  If students are interested in reassessing they have one week to complete the reassessment guidelines. So, this reassessment will need to be completed by next Friday. Link to the Reassessment Guidelines Sheet.  In my class, anyone can choose to take the reassessment, there is no minimum grade. IE a student that scores an 85% could choose to take the reassessment to potentially due better.  However, if a student does poorly on the initial assessment, I may require them to retake it.

Just to give you some information about my rules about reassessment:
  • I will always use the reassessment grade even if the initial grade was higher (I feel this ensures that students take the reassessment seriously)
  • Parents need to sign the original assessment and it needs to be returned to me
  • All reassessment meetings and work needs to be completed outside of class.  If students need extra help or support I am available in the mornings before school.
  • Students have one week to complete the guidelines sheet and initially meet with me and then one additional week to take the test
I know this may seem like a lot of steps, but I believe it will help your child be more successful on the reassessment and have an overall better understanding of the content. Students have until Thursday September 28 to complete the guidelines reassessment sheet and meet with me to review it. In that meeting the student and I will schedule the follow up meeting where they will take the actual reassessment.

This week we worked on learning target 5 which covered order of operations with rational numbers.  Students took the formative Thursday.  We began learning target 6 which covers converting fractions, decimals, and percent and will work on this through the middle of next week.  As of now, our next summative over the entire number system unit is tentatively scheduled Tuesday, October 3.  Remember that students do not need to spend more than 30 minutes a night on math homework; just sign their homework verifying they worked diligently for 30 minutes and they can stop.

Science –
This week was all about Space Systems Goal 2 - How gravity affects the items around us.  We spent Monday through Wednesday describing gravity as a force that exerts a constant pull on all objects and that gravity affects all objects - regardless of size as long as they have mass.  This idea is difficult to see happening on Earth.

In order to view the limitations of falling objects on Earth we made objects fall to Earth with the question in mind - “Do all objects fall to Earth with the same speed?”  Ask your student how it turned out!

Enjoy your weekend - please email or call if you have any questions.

ELA –

This is our last week before our first official assessment over our first learning goal: students will be able to read with stamina, choose good fit books and show their thinking about their reading in writing and conversation.

We've been exploring different ways to think about and respond to our books, and students have been writing about their books in the way that works for them. Next week, they will be writing me a letter about their progress as a reader over the first month of school as their first summative assessment.

Page goals are due on Monday, 9/25.

Social Studies

On Monday, in honor of Constitution Day, we discussed The Bill of Rights and the development of law from the time of Hammurabi forwards. We have explored Hammurabi's Law Code for the remainder of the week, ending with "What If Hammurabi Was Your Principal?"

Next week we will have a vocabulary test on Monday and move towards the conclusion of our look at Mesopotamia.

Science –
Students began this week learning to compare and contrast objects and supporting them with observations, qualitative, or quantitative data. Students then made observations of objects on the front lawn of Hixson Middle. Using their observation data they practiced comparing and contrasting the objects with their classmates.  They completed their summative assessment for the unit on Tuesday and Wednesday by comparing and contrasting their space objects they  researched last week.

Next week we will be exploring gravity, mass, and weight. Students will explore the idea of universal gravitation by dropping objects and assessing how quickly they fall to the ground.

ELA –

We're working on the third part of our learning goal this week: "students will show their thinking about their reading in conversation and writing."

Oftentimes, we equate writing about reading with summaries, but we explored some new and interesting ways to show what we think about our reading while going deeper with our thoughts! Check out Ms. K's Instagram page to see some snaps of some creative student work that showcases their individuality and their deep thinking about their reading.

We also set new page goals, so ask your student about his or her reading!

Social Studies
This week, students have begun looking at the geography of Mesopotamia. We are looking at the ways in which rivers can influence the development of civilization. Although there are many river valley civilizations, each developed very unique qualities. Students also completed a Vocabulary Activity with a test to follow next Friday.

On Monday, we will be celebrating Constitution Day by wondering what would happen if Hammurabi was the principal of Hixson.

Information and assignments for my class can all be found on my website.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Science –
This week was about research and student choice.  Students identified qualitative and quantitative data gathered about three student chosen objects in our universe.  They condensed their research into descriptive paragraphs, and chose one of the objects to present to the class. We ended the week with students presenting their knowledge to the class by essay, slides presentation, posters and even some great iMovie magic.

Next week students will be analyzing their research and creating compare and contrast statements which are supported by their data.  We will practice by comparing given objects prior to using the student written statements on their objects as a summative assessment for this section.

Enjoy your weekend - please email or call if you have any questions.

ELA –

Have you asked your student about his or her reading? That's been our focus this week! We spent some time talking about how to "keep it real" with our independent reading (no faking it!) and how to handle a book that seems confusing. Having an open discussion about these very common reading issues (ones adults deal with as well!) is an important part to building an open reading culture in our classroom.

This week marked the start of reading conferences. I am meeting with each student to share a short discussion on their reading likes/dislikes and past experiences with reading. This is one of my favorite things to do and really helps me recommend good books to my readers! Students have all signed up for a slot before school, during Discovery, during lunch or after school in the month of September.

Social Studies

This week we wrapped up our introduction to the methods of history and prehistory. Students now have the beginnings of an historian's vocabulary and are beginning to understand the changes brought about by the agricultural revolution. We also discussed the basic gifts of river valleys and why the first civilizations evolved there. On Monday, we will begin looking at Mesopotamia.

Information and assignments for my class can all be found on my website.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Science –

This week in science we began exploring the world outside of Earth.  Students attempted to identify several celestial objects.  As a group we explored what we knew about objects like planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies and nebulas. The end goal of this discussion was to separate our factual knowledge into quantitative, qualitative, or inferential data.

Thursday we began individual research on three student chosen celestial objects.  We will use this research to create compare and contrast statements that use researched data to support the statements.  Students will be creating and giving a presentation to their classmates on one of their researched objects Monday to Wednesday of next week.

Enjoy your weekend - please email or call if you have any questions.

ELA –

This week, we set our first reading goal in ELA class and explored our "reading histories" in an effort to get to know ourselves better as readers.

Reading goals will be set every two weeks and are based on how many pages a student can naturally read in 10 minutes. I'm asking for 2 hours of reading/week, but since the goal is page-based, no "clock watching" is necessary. Students will be updating their progress daily on our digital spreadsheet. Ask your student about his/her independent reading over this long weekend!

Don't forget to stay updated with what's going on in ELA by visiting Ms. K's blog or follow Willow ELA's Instagram page.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies, we have continued to look at the methods of history. Students are expanding their vocabulary, and will be tested on their new words next Friday. The answer key will be available on my website for corrections this weekend.

Next week, we will begin looking at River Valley Civilizations.

Information and assignments for my class can all be found on my website.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

algebra-  Got their chapter 1 tests back, if they were below 80% they were required to reassess. Reassessment will only be allowed first semester. I encourage students to come see me as soon as they don't understand something. We are working through Chapter 2 and will probably be testing in about 2 weeks.

7th grade- Finished up Learning Target 1 and 2 this week, they took their formatives, ask students how they're feeling about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing +/- numbers. We will be working on the same thing next week but with fractions and decimals, oh my!

Science –

Air Traffic Controller Geringer here - all planes have landed safely. Congratulations to our class winners.  Our longest flight was an impressive 19 meters.  On top of our paper airplane flying students participated in a group research and discussion defining astronomy, professions, and what researchers use to study the world above our heads.  We finished the week with a travel through celestial bodies to test our existing knowledge of space.

Next week students will begin a research project that has them identify information about three celestial objects.  The choice is theirs for what objects they chose to research.  The end goal is to create statements that compare and contrast their chosen objects and back up their statements with facts. They will be creating a visual presentation for one of these items to share with their classmates at the conclusion of the project.

Have a fantastic long weekend.
