Willow Weekly December 12-16

Welcome to the Willow Weekly.  Here you will find all of your Team Willow news and information.  Please sign up for automatic updates and you will be notified whenever an update is made.

Important Information: 
After school help sessions and activities are after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until 4:00. At least one teacher from Willow will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00. A list of other after school opportunities can be found here.

English –
Our publishing party is MONDAY!

Students should come with printed covers if they designed them on Canva or with finished paper covers from home. Some students finished and turned in their stories today, so just check with your child to make sure!

For the publishing party, I'll be providing hot chocolate (made with water). Students are welcome to bring snacks, marshmallows, peppermint sticks, etc for our celebration. Our stories are AWESOME, and I'm so excited for us to share our writing!

Social Studies –
Students are continuing to explore Hinduism and The Caste System. Working in groups this week, students explored the Origins, Beliefs, Practices, and The Caste System, creating word webs to illustrate their thinking.

All missing work is due by the end of the day next Tuesday.

Math- 
7th grade students had a test- if they did not finish in class they will have some time on Monday. They will be making any corrections for points on Monday.

algebra is taking their final and have their animal project for chapter 5 due next Tuesday before break.

Science –
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
  • What were the questions like on your science summative?
  • What question did you find the most challenging?
The targets this week have been:
  1. Goal 4: I am able to develop and use models to describe cyclic patterns of Earth’s seasons.
  2. Goal 5: I am able to develop and use models to describe cyclic patterns of eclipses.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
  1. Patterns: Observing patterns & events guides organization and classification & leads to understanding of relationships.
  2. Cause and Effect: Investigating and explaining causal relationships may predict & explain events.
Activities students participated in this week:
  1. Monday - Students either finished and corrected late assignments or worked on the review questions.   
  2. Tuesday - Corrected review questions and studied for the summative assessment.
  3. Wednesday - Summative Assessment on Seasons and Eclipses.
  4. Thursday - Began watching a BBC documentary about the challenges facing the NASA Mission to Mars. Class discussion regarding some of those challenges.
  5. Friday - Innovation Hour started our day. Finished watching the BBC documentary about the challenges facing the NASA Mission to Mars.
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
  1. }Axial Tilt with orbital position and sunlight intensity Cause & Effect = Explain why we have seasons.
  2. Vocabulary: Length of shadows, Axis, Sunlight intensity, Direct and Indirect Sunlight, Angle of sun rays.
NEXT WEEK the students will be working on understanding the complicated requirements for a save manned mission to Mars.

Math- 
7th grade- This week we worked on solving multi-step equations with fractions. We will be finishing up learning target 7 and 8 next week and taking their summative tests over expressions and equations.

Algebra is gearing up to take their finals next Thursday, Friday and Monday. They are working on a project for chapter 5 that will be due the last day before break. Their rubric and directions are on classroom. They can also find their review with answers on classroom.

Summative on Seasons and Eclipses is Wednesday, 7 December.
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
  • When is the our Winter Solstice?
  • What is the angle of sunlight in Webster Groves on the Winter Solstice?
The targets this week have been:
  1. Goal 4: I am able to develop and use models to describe cyclic patterns of Earth’s seasons.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
  1. Patterns: Observing patterns & events guides organization and classification & leads to understanding of relationships.
  2. Cause and Effect: Investigating and explaining causal relationships may predict & explain events.
Activities students participated in this week:
  1. Monday - Reviewed sunlight angles and shadows, then <Sun Path> lab groups predicted the Path of the Sun across the sky at different seasons.   
  2. Tuesday - Continued learning Sun’s Path Across the sky during different seasons with their <Sun Path> lab groups, and worked on eclipses.
  3. Wednesday - Completed a student survey of Mr. Daniels and began sorting diagrams of angles of sunlight with their <Sun Path> lab group and made predictions of when it occurred in Webster Groves.
  4. Thursday - Completed sun angle sorting and prediction activity, took a formative assessment over the angle of sunlight activity, and worked on eclipses.
  5. Friday - Cleared the fog by reviewing and tying together all the 5 concepts related to seasons: axial tilt, angle of sunlight, Sun’s Path across the time at different seasons, intensity of sunlight, and length of shadows. Then did a formative Kahoot review activity.
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
  1. }Axial Tilt with orbital position and sunlight intensity Cause & Effect = Explain why we have seasons.
  2. Vocabulary: Length of shadows, Axis, Sunlight intensity, Direct and Indirect Sunlight, Angle of sun rays.

English –
Thanksgiving Break snapshots were due today on Google Classroom. Students must fill out a self-evaluation form before I will put a grade in for the snapshot.

I checked with students on their progress on their realistic fiction drafts today. For students who had not finished their rough drafts, each made a plan for when he/she plans to be finished with their draft. Throughout the next two weeks, we will continue polishing and revising our stories.

Our publishing party will be two weeks from today! I am so excited to celebrate and share our stories while enjoying hot chocolate!

Social Studies –

Students this week have been exploring the geography of India.  A Geo Challenge was completed, and students are currently working on charts rating the most desirable settlement locations.  A Vocabulary Activity was also completed and there will be a Vocabulary Test next Thursday. 

Next week we will complete our look at geography and begin focusing on Hinduism and Buddhism.

Math- 
7th grade started working on solving two step equations. Next week they will take a formative and start working on multi-step equations.

algebra is working on slope intercept form right now and began graphing today. They will continue working with Linear equations next week and prepping for their upcoming finals. Students will need to have a C in the class or above a C on their final to remain in algebra.
