Week of 5/15-5/19

Welcome to the Willow Weekly.  Here you will find all of your Team Willow news and information.  Please sign up for automatic updates and you will be notified whenever an update is made.

Important Information:
  • Six Flags information- The cost for each student this year is $33.00.  This fee includes admission and transportation to and from the park.  Students must turn in their permission slip (click here for a copy) and pay this amount no later than Monday, May 15, 2017.  Students who already have passes to the park will need to pay a $6.00 transportation fee.  Checks should be made payable to Webster Groves School District.  Please place the signed permission form and payment (cash, check or money order) in an envelope with your student's name and team on the envelope.  Please turn the envelope in at the main office.
Buses will depart Hixson at approximately 9:30 am and leave Six Flags for the return trip to school at 4:30pm.  We should arrive back at Hixson at approximately 5:00pm.  You may pick up your child upon our return to school.  Hixson students who use transportation provided by VTS will board the activity bus at Hixson for the trip home.
Students with significant disciplinary offenses in Term 6 may not be allowed to attend the field trip and will instead spend the day at Hixson providing community service.
  • Please remind your students to charge their Chromebook every night! We have had many students come to class with dead Chromebooks, which slows down instruction. Chromebook collection for Willow is the 19th!
  • This is also a good time to check in with your students to make sure they are finishing the year strong. We've had an increase of late work and off-task behavior as we've entered this last term.
  • After school activities and help sessions have ended for the year

ELA –

We finished up The Outsiders this week! Students wrapped up the unit by either taking a traditional test or by participating in a group discussion. This was a summative grade & their final grade in the gradebook for second semester.

We will watch the movie version of The Outsiders on Tuesday during class. If students dress up like a greaser or a Soc on Tuesday, I'll give them 5 extra points on their final summative grade. No fake weapons or candy cigarettes, please. Students are welcome to bring a snack to class on Tuesday as well.

Students finished up their Medieval Concept Web projects this week. They have done amazing work and I'm so proud of all they have done. They will share their projects next Tuesday.

ELA –
Students are still moving ahead in The Outsiders. They have until the 19th to finish the entire book, and many students have torn through it and are moving on to other extension activities. On Monday, we will have our second discussion about the novel in preparation for the final discussion on the 19th.

After talking it over with a few students, I have decided to offer two options for the final summative assessment: students may either participate in the whole class discussion on the 19th and receive their grade based on their contributions, or they may opt to take a traditional comprehension test over the novel. Students will choose their preferred testing method next week.

Social Studies –

Next week is the final week for students to work on their cumulative project on The Middle Ages. Research should be finished or near finished by Monday. For the rest of the week they will need to begin organizing their information into concept webs. Work will be shared on May 23rd.

ELA –
Week one of The Outsiders went well! Students read chapters 1-3 and participated in a small group & whole class discussion today. Students are thinking deeply and asking great questions. They are being assessed on their ability to participate in academic discussions, with a summative grade being given for the final discussion on May 19th.

Argumentative tests will be graded next week and updated in SIS. The revision window for the argumentative tests will close on May 17th.

Don't forget to stay updated with what's going on in ELA by visiting Ms. K's blog.

Social Studies –
Students have begun work on a cooperative learning activity for the Middle Ages. They will work on this for the remainder of the year. They will be exploring social, economic, technological, and religious changes in both Europe and Africa and creating concept maps to share their knowledge. So far I'm very impressed with their work. They have come a long way since last August!

Science –
Any student wanting to tie-dye a T-shirt for track day should bring a plain white T-shirt to school by Wednesday.

All 7th grade science students will begin an activity next week which will require large amounts of corrugated cardboard. If you have any extra laying around, or if you have easy access to large quantities of it, we would LOVE to take it off your hands.  We’ve been collecting bike boxes from local shops, but are still in need of more. The bigger the better, but any size is useful.

All students will find out about this “mystery” activity on Wednesday of next week. I will send home information about it (and your invitation to join us for the culminating event) in next week’s blog.

Thanks for your support this year and for any and all cardboard you can offer!
