English – We're still trucking along through The Outsiders! The assessment piece for this whole-class read is related to students' ability to hold collaborative discussions about literature. If you've been in a book club, you know that productive discussions require deep thinking about the book and certain social strategies such as allowing others to speak, asking deep questions that get the conversation rolling, and staying focused on the topic (including knowing when to push the discussion back on track!). Students set their own reading calendars with their groups and have done a great job sticking with them. They are stopping and writing to capture their thinking about their reading in the way that best suits them and their style (no worksheets or "answer these questions about the chapter" forms) after each chapter. Discussions have been thought-provoking for me as a listener!

Next week will have more of the same pattern of reading, writing and discussions, but I will be sprinkling in current references to themes that are addressed in The Outsiders, such as pop culture situations, news stories and other methods of connecting the book to the real world.

Finally, here's a quick snap of students' creative responses to the prompt "What does it mean to be an outsider?"

Math-

We have started our final project of the semester. The students are to make up a game that can be played in class. They will work on knowing all the ins and outs of their game and what the chances are winning. Students will be working on this next week as well. They may bring their own supplies to create pieces or boards for their game. I have some dice and cards they borrow. There is a lot of creativity going on in the classroom!

We have been finishing up Europe during the Middle Ages.  Students examined The Magna Carta and its relationship with the U.S. Constitution, explored the effect of The Black Death on feudalism, and finally ended with a look at The Crusades.  Next week we will begin looking at the medieval African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.

Missing work will be accepted until May 19th at 4:00 p.m.

The notes for this unit are already up on my website, and I encourage students to begin looking at them right away.

Students who did not finish their tests this week need to come in before school (I'm here by 7:30), during lunch, during Discovery or after school (Tuesday-Thursday).

We started reading The Outsiders today (I may or may not have dressed up for the occasion...) and will finish the year with this wonderful book! Students will spend the majority of their time reading the book, discussing it with collaborative groups and writing to think about their reading. They will be assessed on their ability to hold collegial, collaborative discussions.
