English –
I've been blogging about our time in ELA, so be sure to hop over and read about what's going on!

This week, we set a new page goal (for our first official two-week tracking period!) and practiced capturing our thinking in the form of "jots," which are short responses that show thinking in a variety of ways: images, graphs, charts, etc. These "jots" are seeds of thinking that have the potential to be turned into longer responses.

As we near the end of Term 1, students will be receiving 2 more grades: a workshop participation grade and a reading goal grade. Please click on the links to find out more about expectations for each of these grades! Students self-assessed on their workshop participation over the past weeks, and I will be touching base with those whose scores don't align with my own perception.

Social Studies –
Students have been exploring early Mesopotamia.  We began the week by looking at Mesopotamian inventions and how they still affect us today.  Some examples would be the wheel, written language, and the seven-day week.

Students were given class time to work on their Chapter 4 activities; reading Chapter 4, the Mesopotamian Vocabulary Activity, and an Archaeology Activity.  I have also advised students to begin copying the notes from my website into their notebooks.  These may be found on my website in the Unit Resources section and are due on Tuesday.

On Friday, we took a little detour to celebrate Constitution Day, and look at the ways in which it was influenced by Hammurabi’s Law Code.  We will continue with this next week.

Math-
7th grade math- This week we had a summative over learning target 1-3, Grades went into the gradebook today. We are working on order of operations with integers and will take a formative next Monday.
Algebra- This week they got their tests back over chapter 1, they had the opportunity to reassess throughout the week. We have started chapter 2, solving equations. They will have a quiz next week over 2.1-2.3.

Check out my blog for some of the great things we've been doing in class.

I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter).

To sign up for math homework updates message @math7port to 81010

Science –
Willow Science
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
  • Did your paper airplane engineering group reach the target of an average 875 cm distance?
  • What was you more important “Cause & Effect.”
  • What was your conclusion?
The targets this week have been:
  1. I am able to describe how the engineering changes caused the airplane model to be effected (cause and effects).
  2. I able able to describe and perform the engineering process.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
  1. “Systems & System Models”: Defining the system under study - specifying its boundaries and making explicit a model of that system - provides tools for understanding and testing ideas that are applicable throughout science and engineering.
  2. “Cause & Effect”: Mechanism and explanation. Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts.
The Habits of Mind we were developing are
16. Learning Continuously
6. Striving for Accuracy & Precision
10. Gathering Data Through All Senses
Activities students participated in this week:
  1. Monday - Goal and Cross Cutting Concepts Review continued Graphing Concepts. Handed in Anchor A - Calculating Means.
  2. Tuesday students completed graphing instructions and working collaboratively with their <Plane group> on making their graphs.
  3. Wednesday: Students used their Chromebooks to learn how to access the Brain Catalyst, emailed me at wgcloud.org to make sure I’m added to their contacts, signed up for Google Classroom, and worked with their <Plane group.>
  4. Thursday: I was working with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science teachers during curriculum development. The students worked with their <Plane group> to finish writing their Paper Airplane Engineering Lab Reports.
  5. Friday: Each <Plane group> presented/shared their most prominent Cause & Effect airplane design. Handed in their Lab Reports, and began playing a Kahoot on Qualitative and Quantitative observations/data Chromebook distribution, School picture taking, finishing notes, and working with their lab groups on making their graphs and filling in their lab reports.
  6. Their goal is to fly over an average of 875 cm. If you would like to see the lesson follow this link: Paper Airplane Engineering Project
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
  1. }The independent variable is intentionally changed by the engineer/researcher.
  2. }The dependent variable – “depends… whatever is being measured!” – measured to see if it changing and how?
  3. }Constants are those things which stays the same during every trial of the experiment.
NEXT WEEK the students will create an outline the engineering processes, take a Space Systems pretest, and begin their Space Objects Project.
If you have any questions or concerns please email me!
