This week students are planning, drafting and revising a personal essay. The essay follows the guidelines put forth by the popular NPR show "This I Believe." Students looked at models to determine characteristics of personal essays, discussed how to use stories to demonstrate a belief and finally generate ideas for their own belief statement for the essay.

On Thursday, students will take their Fall Reading Assessment-- the SRI (scholastic reading inventory). The assessment measures students fluency and vocabulary and is used to help guide teachers in providing supports for students' reading. The score that is generated is useful in guiding students to "just-right books"-- within the reading range. However, a student's interest is the number one factor for whether a book is "just right."

Math- We took a break from the last unit of the year (Comparing & Scaling) to review for the MAP test. Now students have completed and graded the assessments for this unit. For the reminder of the year, students will learn an eighth grade concept (slope). Grades are updated, please check the parent portal.

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students have started the Genetics unit activities. The vocabulary is below. You may find them asking more questions about their heredity.
Allele
Asexual reproduction
Chromosomes/ Genes/DNA
Dominant
Genotype
Heredity
Heterozygous
Homozygous
Phenotype
Recessive
Sexual reproduction

The students have also expressed an increased awareness of proper nutrition. There was an emphasis of good nutrition and healthy eating to prevent cardiovascular disease. If you find your student asking for healthy snacks or you may suggest more healthy snacks, you may find them much more receptive!

If you have any questions or comments please let me know.

Social Studies –

Students are continuing their path through the Middle Ages.  This week we focused on The Black Death and the Magna Carta – both of which helped bring about the end of feudalism.  In addition, elements of the Magna Carta were lifted directly to form parts of the U.S. Constitution.  Next week, we will turn our attention to the Crusades and the three major religions involved in that series of wars.

On Monday, students visited the library and took advantage of extra reading time. Students were reminded to check their Google email account for a letter from the library with information about library fees, checked out books, and overdue books.

This week students began a new writing project "This I Believe," modeled after the NPR show that shared personal essays by people from all walks of life. The students read model essays and have had a chance also to listen to some of the essays. On Thursday, students began with a pre-writing activity to get them thinking about how personal stories can provided evidence for beliefs in action.

On Friday, students will be guided through a second pre-writing activity to help them become aware of a personal belief they hold, which might become the main idea for their own "This I believe" personal essay, which we will begin drafting next week.

Science –

This week in Dynamic Science students had a tremendous learning experience at the Practical Anatomy Lab at SLU! Please ask your student about the Wednesday pig heart dissection field trip! Dr. Ray Vollmer reported to the students that now doctors are seeing the rapid increase in high cholesterol and atherosclerosis in children as young as 10 years old. We have completed the circulatory and respiratory systems and finished up this week talking about how to keep a healthy circulatory system! The emphasis has been on aerobic exercise and great nutrition, including “super-foods.”

On Monday, 21 April the students will take their summative circulatory and respiratory systems test.

Thank you to the 13 parents who supervised the pig heart dissection field trip on Monday!

The students have been encouraged to continue to take the Quia quiz to check their understanding of the unit concepts! At this point they should be scoring at least a  90% without using any of their notes.  www.quia.com/web  - “Circulatory/Respiratory Systems Formative Quiz.”

If you have any questions or comments please let me know.

Social Studies –

Students have been working on the project this week – called the Middle Ages R.A.F.T.  The initials stand for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic.  Students were allowed to choose their own path from a grid and develop a project that suits their interests.  I am really looking forward to seeing the projects on Monday.  Next week, we will continue looking at the Medieval Period – particularly the Crusades and The Black Death.

Late last week students worked in small groups to discuss the difference between justice and revenge in preparation for a reading of A.B. Guthrie's short story "Bargain." EArly this week, students drafted plotlines (or timelines) to support their comprehension of the story. Alongside this work, students were involved in word study and received a crossword puzzle to help them review for a small quiz next week over the vocabulary words from "Bargain" and "A Mason-Dixon Memory."

On Thursday, the students participated in a conversation to get them thinking about the themes within "Bargain": justice vs. revenge and "do the right thing (the unit theme)." Conversations were lively as students had many reasons for whether or not they would turn in the protagonist for the death of the antagonist.

Math-

The MAP testing is finally over! Dynamic students did a good job focusing while taking the tests.  Prior to the test we deviated from the Comparing & Scaling unit, so we could cover some of the concepts that was not in of our units. Next week, we will finish and start the assessments for the Comparing & Scaling unit.
Grades on the next process report will be the same as the 4th term, because we had not finished the assessments for our current unit by the end of 5th term.  Grades will be updated in about two weeks.

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students have been continuing to study the circulatory and respiratory system. Most of the students are feeling there are lots of parts to the heart and are working to be able to describe the path of the blood. The concept of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is coming into their vocabulary! Next Tuesday, in order to practice some dissection skills the students will be dissecting an earthworm.

On Wednesday, 16 April is the Dynamic field trip to the Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education Lab at St. Louis University to participate in the ADVENTURES IN MEDICINE and SCIENCE (AIMS) program to do a pig heart dissection. This is a top notch, state of the art dissection lab! The students will also see a comparison of a healthy human heart compared to a diseased human heart.

We have about 29 lab groups for the SLU pig heart dissection lab and we have 7 parents whom have volunteered to supervise this field trip. (Thank you to Lisa Gilbert, Abby Marshall, Mary Niemira, Kim Richardson, Kim Schultz, Peggy Smegner, Jenny Gupta-Trampe!) It is best if we had 1 adult to every 2 labs groups, which means we need about 7 more parent supervisors.

If you can volunteer to supervise this field trip, please send me an e-mail! daniels.mark@wgmail.org. Parent supervisors should meet us at SLU at 12:20 and we will finish the lab before 2:00.

Social Studies –

This week we have been continuing our look at The Middle Ages.  Students spent time with castles and siege warfare.  We finished the week with a look at the development of towns and the rise off the middle class.  Next week, students will be working on their project for this unit, a R.A.F.T. (Role, Audience, Format, Topic).  Students will choose from a variety of options to customize their project.  I gave each a hard copy of the grid on Thursday, but it can also be found on my website under the Unit Resources menu.

This week students have  been looking at Feudalism and the reintroduction of civilization to Western Europe.  As a brain break during MAP test days, students have been watching a medieval murder mystery called One Corpse Too Many – set in Shrewsbury, England.  This is a wonderfully well researched story that portrays monasteries, castles, knights, and a duel.
We will be continuing with the Middle Ages in Europe next week by looking at the unique art and architecture of the time as well as the development of towns and the middle class.
