We've been jotting away about our chosen books. Students completed 4 new jots this week about author's craft and analytic responses to characters, setting and plot.

Students should be finished rereading their books by Friday, February 2nd. Next week will focus on starting to formulate a companion book with chapters and long, analytic responses that show each student's individual thinking about his/her book.

Students began The Classical World unit this week by focusing on geography. This is the first time they have looked at a civilization that isn't a river valley and we have been examining the challenges of more difficult living circumstances. It's all about controlling the Mediterranean Sea and the crossroads of trade. On Friday, we graded the Geo Challenge for Greece and the Vocabulary Activity. There will be a vocabulary test next Friday.

Next week we will start examining the different governments that developed in Greece - including the differences between a democracy and republic.

ELA –
Students have been working hard at capturing their deep thinking about their chosen books. I asked for 3 "jots" to be completed by today. Students will be choosing one and evaluating themselves on whether they included a "juicy" idea and several pieces of text evidence. That will be a grade in the gradebook.

Next week, I'll be asking for 4 new jots about their book. These jots will be turning into full-fledged chapters in a literary analysis book in the coming weeks.

ELA –
We've started a new unit--informational writing! In this unit, students will be writing to explain their thinking, theories and wonderings about a favorite book. Students will be rereading their chosen book over the next three weeks. They should be finished rereading the book by Friday, February 2nd.

This week, we spent some time refreshing our memories on what it means to write about their reading as a seventh grader. We're going beyond summarizing and trying to dig deep with our thinking by exploring characters, themes, symbolism and more.

This week we have continued looking at India and China. Students began a summative activity on both civilizations that is due on January 19th. The directions can be located in The Ancient World section of my website. Students will have every day through 1/19 to complete this project.

Science

This week in science we reviewed goal 1 and 2 in our structure and function of cells unit. We covered much of this information on cell theory, cell hierarchy, and organelle prior to winter break. We used this week as review due to absences and the long layoff over the holiday period. Friday students took a formative assessment over these topics

Next week students will be furthering their exploration of cells using microscopes to observe the differences in plant and animal cells.
