Hixson Middle School Attendance to Junior Achievement Career Fair

Our school was accepted to participate in the Junior Achievement Middle School Career Fair.
Hixson Middle School 7th grade students will be traveling to the Moolah Shrine located at 12545 Fee Fee Road St. Louis, MO 63146 on Tuesday, February 2 for this field trip. As part of the guidance counseling curriculum career lessons will be delivered to students prior to the field trip by our grade level counselors and interns.

We will leave Hixson at 9:55 am and depart from the career fair at 12:15 pm. Due to the field trip overlapping with our Hixson lunch times each team will be making arrangements to eat at school upon their return.

Mrs. Kraushaar and Ms. Coffman have written another Donor's choose to get some bouncy bands and some fidgets to help our students focus. Any donations toward our project will directly aid students in focusing in on daily tasks, which translates to better grades and increased learning. We want our students to move their bodies while growing their brains. We hope this project will help our students to continue to move toward the goal of lifelong learning! You can find the link to view our donors here.

At least one teacher from Dynamic will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00.

We continued working on writing about our reading this week as part of our information unit. Students will eventually be producing a companion book to their chosen novels, and they were very excited to learn that their peers will be reading their published books eventually!

I have started requiring 1.5-2 pages of writing about their book each class period, and students know that if they don't accomplish this in class, it becomes homework. Meeting this goal counts toward their participation grade for class.

Writing invitations are issued a few times per week as a way for students to achieve the 4 for class participation! They can be found on Google Classroom.

Math-
7th grade math will be taking their assessment over scale factor on Wednesday the 3rd. They were given their study guides today and will review with them Monday. Our next unit will be solving equations. I will be sending emails home over the next day if your student is missing assignments or has below a 65%.
Algebra just finished up their systems unit and will have a short unit over exponents next.

Social Studies –

We have been looking at Greek culture this week – specifically art and architecture.  Please ask your student if they can tell the difference between Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic sculptures.  They are just starting, but they may surprise you.  We have also been looking for examples of Greek architecture in the modern world.  As you drive around this weekend, see if they can spot elements in the buildings you see.  We will continue with culture next week.

Please ask your students to share the words they are learning as we explore Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

The learning goals this week have been:
  1. Goal 1:    Student understands that living organisms are systems of interacting subsystems composed, on the most basic level, of cells.
  2. Goal 2:  Student develops and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
  • Cross-Cutting Concepts
    • Systems and System models: Defining systems and system models are ways to understand ideas/concepts.
    • Scale, Proportion, and Quantity: Changes in scale, proportion, or quantity affect a system’s structure and/or performance.
    • Structure and Function: The way in which an object or living thing is shaped & its substructures determine many of its properties and functions.

  • Students have been working on knowing and understanding “Cell Theory” and “6 Characteristics of Living” things. I have been reviewing with the students their note taking skills and organization.
  • Students did their cell part presentations on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Wednesday & Thursday we did different activities to deepen understanding - class discussion, Q & A, slide review, multiple examples for each characteristics, and a couple of Kahoots.
  • Friday reviewed the goals and cross-cutting concepts, Q & A for clarification, and ended with the Formative re-Assessment for the Cell Theory and Characteristics of Organisms.

Next week the students will dig into levels of organization of complex organisms.

Students have been working hard on thinking and rethinking strategies and methods for responding to their reading in writing. This informational unit all hinges on your student's self-selected book, so check in with your student on his/her reading progress! Our first page goal check-in is on Monday, January 25th. As a reminder, grades are calculated on a proficiency scale. Students receive a three (90-95%) for achieving their reading goal and actively participating in class. To attain the 4 (95-100%), students must participate in the above-and-beyond activities, such as completing a book project (options here) and/or by regularly participating in writing invitations (extended on Google Classroom). Students must submit these above-and-beyond requirements to me prior to the 25th to be considered for the 4!

Math-
This week in math, the few days we had, we talked more in depth about scale factor and similar figures. We had an activity today where we watched a clip of Zoolander and talked about a scale model and how he was mistaken and how many times bigger the school building should be to make it a functioning school building.  We should be finishing up our unit this next week. Be on the lookout for a test soon!

Social Studies –

This has been an abbreviated week in Social Studies.  Career Fair lessons were held by the counselors in our room on Tuesday.  Students were able to take a look at some choices and narrow their focus in preparation for the Career Fair Field Trip on February 2nd.   Due to the snow day, our work with Athens and Sparta didn’t begin until Thursday.  We will continue looking at these two cites next week.

Please ask your students to share the words they are learning as we explore Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

We finished up our Winter Break Snapshots this week, and we transitioned right into our new unit of study: Writing About Reading: From Reader's Notebooks to Companion Books. Students have selected a book that they truly enjoy reading and will be working on creating a companion book. The genre of writing we're focusing on is information writing.

Today (Friday), students explored new ways to write about reading with the focus of liking what they write! Too often, students are told what to write and how to write it. Today was all about letting go of worrying about what I want as the teacher and discovering what their imaginations are capable of creating. I hope that students learn that all writing can be creative throughout this unit, not just the stories and poems that they produce.

Good to know: Students set a reading calendar with their partners and established their own page goals. The first check-in date is January 25th.

Social Studies –

Students began the week by reflecting on their learning.  Many surprised themselves by looking back at their initial thoughts about geography in ancient Greece and seeing how far they’ve come.  We’ve since moved on to vocabulary words (there will be a quick vocabulary test next Thursday) and the different types of government in ancient Greece.  We ended the week by beginning our look at Athens and Sparta.

Please ask your students to share the words they are learning as we explore Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

We have been working on our winter break snapshot writing! Snapshot writing is a skill with a yearlong focus. We'll have three formative grades on this skill, which will culminate in a summative grade in April. For more information on how the snapshot writing is graded, please see the scoring guide here.
The Winter Break Snapshot Writing is due on Tuesday, Jan. 12th.

Next week, we will be beginning our next unit of study: Companion Novels and Informational Writing. Students have selected a book that they will be reading with a partner. This book will be used throughout the unit. Students will be increasing the depth of thinking in their reading responses and writing in a way that shows their voice and opinions in a compelling manner.

Ask your student about what book he/she is reading!
