We committed to our story ideas this week! Our "Coming Soon" wall is filled with exciting realistic fiction story blurbs. I can't wait to see the final products!

We also engaged in character development by placing our characters in everyday scenes and exploring who our characters are--their personality traits, their strengths and weaknesses and their motivations.

We ended the week by celebrating The National Day on Writing. We wrote all day on Friday...writer's choice!

Page goals are due on Monday, so make sure to get those last pages read this weekend.

Science –
A busy week in science included two days of research and three days of students focusing on learning goal 4 for our Space Systems unit - Seasons.
Students worked Monday and Tuesday to answer their self created research question about a mission to Mars.  Students who did not answer their question sufficiently should gather more research over the weekend.  They will begin creating a class presentation on Monday.
The remainder of the week was spent reading, discussing, illustrating, and experiencing how direct and indirect lighting from the Sun along with the tilt of the Earth’s axis causes us to experience seasons on Earth.

As 7th grade tradition, students will be performing a pumpkin drop lab on Halloween to further enrich their exploration of gravity.  Students are encouraged but not required to bring in a Pumpkin of any size by Thursday 10/26 or Monday 10/30.  Pumpkins will not be returned.

Science –
This week was demonstration week for Willow Science.  Students created demonstrations to show how the positioning and movement of the Sun, Moon, and Earth cause us to see the moon in different phases. These demonstrations were given one on one with me to assess their knowledge of how motion causes phases. This will be assessed as a formative grade.

Next week students will be doing Phase 1 of our Mission to Mars project.  For this project students will seek to find a solution to a challenge that astronauts traveling to Mars will face in planning and executing a successful Mars mission. The first step will be creating a focused research question that will allow them to focus on a practical solution to the issue they are interested in.

We have some writers this year! We started brainstorming ideas for our realistic fiction pieces. We also set goals for what we want to get better at as writers. The goals they chose from were:

  • Themes
  • Structure
  • Tension
  • Figurative Language
  • Description
  • Dialogue
  • Characters
Ask your student what he/she is working on as a writer!

Next week, we'll continue to collect story ideas and start moving towards committing to one story idea.

Science –
This week in science students explored the cause and effect relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon that result in lunar eclipses.  We had a demonstration day in the auditorium on Monday where students experienced how the viewpoint they are seeing the moon from dictated what they were capable of seeing.
Students began designing a demonstration to show their knowledge of the motions that cause lunar phases on Thursday.  They completed their design on Friday and will be performing the minute long demonstration for me on Tuesday.  This is their formative grade for Goal 3.
There are still a few students who need to reassess their first summative assessment - compare and contrast statements about the objects they researched.  Please check their grades.  If it mentions possibility or necessity for reassessment please tell them to check in with me.
