                         Sept. 4th – Picture Day

Important Information:

After school help sessions and activities begin Sept. 1st.  At least one teacher from Dynamic will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00.

Picture Day - For ID purposes, we would like all students to have pictures taken.  Students who wish to purchase pictures must bring their completed envelopes with payment.

English –
We finished up our look at different 'ingredients' that make up book genres, and I think our students are well-versed on the huge variety of genres available to them in our library!

We also calculated our reading rate this week in class. Please watch this short informational video about what your student's reading rate means and how it connects to our class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cra7QifCFs

We did start tracking this week, and we'll be using the rates as a basis for our first conference next Friday, where I'll discuss whether students met their goals and why/why not. I will be giving a participation/effort grade for independent reading every two weeks.

Next week, we'll be doing some more mini lessons that start leading us into our Reader's Workshop and toward our first reading responses.

Math-
We have been working on our first unit learning goal, "I will be able to solve problems using all operations with rational numbers." 7th grade math students have been working on identifying integers (negative and positive whole numbers) and their movement on a number line. We just finished up adding and subtracting integers with various methods. Ask the students which method works best for them!
Algebra has hit the ground running with their first chapter. They are also working on integers and operations with them as well.

Science –
Welcome to Dynamic Science!
During the first week of science class the learning goal has been “I am developing my observation skills.
The targets have been:
  1. “I am able to demonstrate my understanding of research process skills.”
  2. “I able able to identify my strengths as a learner.”
  3. “I am practicing the engineering process.”
fine and practice inductive reasoning.”
The cross-cutting concept have been:
  1. “Patterns: Observing patterns and events guides organization and classification and leads to understanding of relationships.”
  2. “Cause & Effect: Investigating and explaining causal relationships may predict and explain events.”
The two habits of mind we were developing are #8) Gathering Data Through All Senses and #10) Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
Activities students participated in this week:
  1. Completed learner inventories: Habits of Mind, Thinking Styles and Intelligence Types (Linguistic, Visual/Spatial, Logical-mathematical, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Musical, Kinesthetic, Naturalist, & Existential), Triarchchic Intelligences (Analytical, Creative, & Practical), and Learning Modality Preferences (Visual, Auditory, and Tactile/Kinesthetic).
  2. Completed a Research Method Pretest
  3. Began an Aerodynamic Engineering Lab - prototyping and testing paper airplanes designs.
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
  1. Inductive reasoning is using all your observations and evidence to make a prediction where you have at least a 60% chance of being correct.
  2. Independent Variable: IV is what the engineer/researcher “INTENTIONALLY CHANGES.”
  3. Dependent Variable: DV is whatever is being

Social Studies –

This week, we spent some time looking at Otzi the Iceman.  Students broke into groups – each looking at a different hypothesis about Otzi’s death.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, students looked at some of the scientific tests that were carried out on the body and artifacts found with him.  We are focusing of the methods of history and again, the question:  How do we know what we know?

Students received a Vocabulary Activity (due 9/2) on Thursday.  We will have a quick Vocab test over those ten words next Friday.  Finally, on Friday students began their first Geo Challenge Activity.

English –

We had a great first week in ELA! Next week, we will be talking more about the reading life and calculating how much reading each student is responsible for completing each week (the rate is individual to each student). We will also be learning about the structure of a good reader's response and how to select meaningful events in the text that will lead to a quality reader's response. Starting Monday, each student is expected to bring an independent reading book to class each day.

Math-

We had a great start to our math year this week in class! We will be starting our unit on Number Systems next week. The students are finishing up work on an assignment using 4 four's to solve for numbers 1-40. We will finish that on Monday. They are expected to bring their notebook, pencil and chromebook to class with them each day unless otherwise instructed.

Science –

Welcome to Dynamic Science!
During the first week of science class the learning goal has been “I am developing my observation skills.
The target has been: “I am able to define and practice inductive reasoning.”
The cross-cutting concept has been: : “Patterns: Observing patterns and events guides organization and classification and leads to understanding of relationships.”
The two habits of mind we were developing are Gathering Data Through All Senses and Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
#8
APPLYING PAST KNOWLEDGE to NEW SITUATIONS:
Intelligent people:
  • learn from experience
  • when confronted with new & perplexing problems draw upon their knowledge & experiences as sources of data to support their: ideas, theories, analogies, or processes
  • Are able to abstract meaning from one experience and carry it forward to another
  • are able to apply creative & independent ideas to new and unanticipated tasks, situations, and settings
#10
Gathering Data Through All Senses
Intelligent people:
  • Know all information gets to the brain by the senses: taste, smell, touch, movement, hearing, and sight.
  • Know most of our language, cultural, and physical learning come from interactions with our environment
  • Accurately observe and subsequently analyze the sensory pathway patterns and processes.
  • Sensory pathways are open, alert, and acutely absorb more information than people with withered pathways

Inductive reasoning is using all your observations and evidence to make a prediction where you have at least a 60% chance of being correct.

If it is 50% or less chance of being correct then you are guessing and you are not using inductive reasoning. We utilize inductive reasoning when we write hypotheses.

The students got signed up for Google Classroom and Remind.
If you wish to receive the same text message reminders or email reminders your student will be occasionally receiving, please sign up by: 1) sending a text message to 81010 and put in the message as “@c30be”, and/or go to https://www.remind.com/ and enter the classcode: @c30be.

Next week the students will do a learning style inventories, hypothesis writing and an experiment.

If you have any questions or concerns please email me!

Social Studies –

Welcome to Dynamic Social Studies!  We began this school year with a look at the question How Do We Know What We Know?  This is a way for us to explore the methods of history.  Students have been learning some new vocabulary and even conducted an online archaeological excavation.  Next week, we will be looking at Otzi the Iceman.  Students will also be working on a vocabulary activity beginning Wednesday.
