T-Shirts Are Coming!
We'll be ordering Team Willow shirts this year! Shirts will be approximately $8, and we would like to have shirts ordered by the end of parent-teacher conferences. Here's a mockup of the design we're looking at:

English –
We launched our reading and writing workshop this week! Students are doing a great job managing the four sections of workshop. Here's a quick visual for how our time breaks down during workshop:
Every student should have a personal reading book at this point. Please check in with your child and ask him/her what he/she is reading! Next week, we'll be setting page goals and personal reading goals.

Social Studies –
This week in Social Studies, students worked independently and in groups on a variety of assignments having to do with Pre-History and the methods of historians. We will continue to revisit the topic "How Do We Know What We Know" throughout the year. The deadline for the Vocabulary Activity, Geo Challenge 1, and Anticipation/Reaction Guide was extended until Tuesday. I know that it is more difficult to work on these until the Chromebooks come in.

Math-
This week in math we worked on adding and subtracting integers. We worked using number lines, sea of zeros, party/war, and just the general rules. Next week we will work on multiplying and dividing integers.
Algebra is finishing up chapter 1. Their test will be next Friday.
I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter).

Science –
Willow Science
The targets this week have been:
- I able able demonstrate and show the research process skills.
- I able able to describe and perform the engineering process.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- “Systems & System Models”: Defining the system under study - specifying its boundaries and making explicit a model of that system - provides tools for understanding and testing ideas that are applicable throughout science and engineering.
- “Cause & Effect”: Mechanism and explanation. Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts.
The two habits of mind we were developing are #8) Gathering Data Through All Senses and #16) Learning Continually
Activities students participated in this week:
- Completed Research Process pretest on Monday and Tuesday.
- Class discussion and notes on Team skills: listening, observing, cooperating, responding, and clarifying. The importance of being open minded and diplomatic at all times.
- Wednesday and Thursday have been working on their Paper Airplane Engineering Project. Their goal is to fly over an average of 875 cm. If you would like to see the lesson follow this link: Paper Airplane Engineering Project
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
- “Intentionally change” only 1 thing
- Constants
NEXT WEEK the students will complete their paper airplane engineering project, outline the engineering and research processes, and create and format data tables and graphs.
