We continued working with our "jots" about our reading, which are quick, visual ways to capture our thinking about our book. Students were encouraged to dig deeper than simple summaries--part of choosing good-fit books means that summarizing should be a cinch! We closed up this week with another author's chair session, which I and the students are really enjoying.
Next week will be our first assessment. Students will be asked to reflect on their reading lives and how they've grown or changed as a reader this year. They will capture these reflections in a typed letter or a recorded reflection to me. They will be asked to reflect on their personal goals, page goals and books that they've read. This isn't really something students should "study" for, but it does help if they have a lot of jots to choose from to help them reflect and recall what they've read!

Social Studies –
This week students dove deep into their study of Mesopotamia. We have looked at the geographic advantages and disadvantages of the region and the impact that land and climate have on a people. On Tuesday, we reviewed the answers to the Vocabulary Activity. Students are keeping these as a study guide until next Tuesday and their vocabulary test. At the end of the week, students spent some time with Hammurabi and the oldest, complete written law code. Currently, students are playing with the idea of Hammurabi as their principal. Next week, we will continue in Mesopotamia.
Notes are posted on my website in the section on Mesopotamia. Although we will go over them in class I have been advising students to copy a few slides into their notebooks every evening. Notes may be used on quizzes.

Math-
Students took two formatives this week, one on order of operations with negative numbers and one with adding and subtracting rational numbers. Students had a lot more practice this week with positive and negative numbers. They will have a summative soon.Algebra took a quiz over 2.1-2.3. They will begin solving equations with variables on both sides and some literal equations. There test will be coming up shortly.
Check out my blog for some of the great things we've been doing in class.
I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter).

Science –
Willow Science
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
- What are “QuaLitative observations?”
- What are “QuanTitative observations?”
- In science this week, what was the NASA Engineering/Design Process?
- What did you think about the science pretest? How did you do on it?
- Which universe picture did you find most interesting?
The targets this week have been:
- I am able to describe how the engineering changes caused the airplane model to be effected (cause and effects).
- I able able to describe and perform the engineering process.
- I am able to distinguish quaLitative and quanTitative observations.
- I am able to demonstrate my knowledge and application of the Cross Cutting Concepts.
- I am able to compare and contrast universe objects
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- “Cause & Effect”: Mechanism and explanation. Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts.
The Habits of Mind we were developing are
16. Learning Continuously
6. Striving for Accuracy & Precision
10. Gathering Data Through All Senses
Activities students participated in this week:
- Monday - <Plane> lab groups created a graphic organizer of the Engineering/Design process based on their Paper Airplane Engineering lab process.
- Tuesday students completed a Kahoot FUN-formative assessment over quaLitative and quanTitative observations and recorded the graphic organizer model used by NASA for the Design/Engineering Process. NASA Design Process
- Wednesday: Students worked on a Pretest covering all the units of the year.
- Thursday: Finished the Pretest and began understanding Cause of Seasons and celebrating the Autumnal Equinox at 9:21 today!
- Friday: Had an interactive class discussiong as we saw pictures of the solar system and universe.
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
- }QuaLitative observations/data is anything which can be observed with our senses and described or recorded with LANGUAGE/words.
- }QuanTitative observations/data is anything which can measured and recorded using numbers.
NEXT WEEK the students will research and create their Space Objects Project which is a compare and contrast project.
