On Monday in English,
students visited the library and presented or listened to book talks. Also
this week students continued working on their argumentative essay outlines and
drafts. Students continued developing their evidence and reasons for their
claim as to which of the three short stories was the scariest: "Three Skeleton Key," "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street," and "The Mask of the Red Death." (Links for stories available below.) Thursday they began working on arguments to oppose counterclaims.
A formulaic approach was presented to students:

This week in math, students learned how to graph and solve inequalities. Also, they were assessed on this concept along with solving 2-step equations and collecting like terms. Please check the portal next Friday, hopefully I'll have these grades posted by then.
Science –
In Dynamic Science this week the high point of the week, month, and
so far into the semester was the Rosetta Mission landing a probe called “Philae”
on Comet 67P during our class time! The students recorded real time data on
the comet using their Chromebooks as the landing was occurring. The student’s
witnessed science history on the same level as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
walking on the Moon! Ask your Dynamic Scientist about the mission which was
launched 4 March 2004! Your son or daughter was 2 or 3 years old when it
launched!
The Forces of Nature field trip to Powell Hall was a great experience! The students enjoyed it and it was a great way to have a multidimensional experience to feel the flow of a river, a stream, a thunderstorm, and a trip through the solar system!
Learning
Goal #1: I am able to interpret and analyze data to compare and contrast
universe objects.
Learning Goal #2: I am able to
explain in terms of gravity interactions, motions of specific objects in the
universe and solar system.
In
Dynamic Systems Science the students have been finished doing their
presentations of their research on universe objects. The formats I have seen are
Google Presentations, Posters, Prezi, Google Documents, a cake, and painting on
a canvas, original impressionistic painting on an entire poster board of the
Milky Way Galaxy. It took us 4 days this week for all the students to do their
presentations and take their summative test comparing and contrasting 2
universe objects.
If
a student wants to re-test any of the 3 learning goals, here is the process:
1.
Meet with Coach Daniels before or
after school to review their test.
2.
The student will be assigned some
practice activities depending on their status of their student skills.
a.
For example, if the student does not
have good notes on graphing, they will be required to review the shared Google
Presentation and take notes, and review them with me for feedback.
3.
The student will meet with me again
before or after school to get feedback on their practice activity.
4.
The process is repeated until the
student demonstrates proficiency.
5.
Once a student had demonstrated they
have become proficient with the learning goal, they will take the alternative
assessment on that goal.
The students who would like to begin the
process for re-testing the Scientific Method Goals are required to begin this process before the
end of the day on Thursday, 20 November 2014. The process must be completed by Thursday, 12 December
2014.
Next week we will work on finishing the
data analysis of the Pumpkin Drop experiment and on Wednesday the students will chat with NASA scientists on a DC8
doing research over the South Pole!

Social Studies –
Students have been exploring Hinduism this week. In groups, students sorted statements into 4
categories (Origins, Beliefs, Practices, and the Caste System). They then created graphic organizers,
categorized their statements, discussed the common elements, and explained their
choices to the other groups.
