This week, we finished up summarizing and took our summative assessment on Tuesday. We focused on the next step of connecting and responding to our reading by using a new strategy, the action/reaction method. Students found a "whoa moment" in their reading (the action) and wrote down their thoughts about that moment (the reaction). We practiced this with familiar texts, and students were gradually released to trying the strategy with their own independent book. Next week, they'll learn two new ways to respond and how to turn these "seeds of thinking" into longer responses.

Encourage your student to sign up for a Book Chat on Google Classroom! Book chats are not mandatory, but students who want to reach a 4 (expert) level for class participation should complete one for second term.

Math-

This week in math we talked about converting fractions to decimals and percents. A lot of this was review for them but just applying it. We also started the discussion about absolute value and what that really means. We applied it to order of operations and I taught them a war game using the different colors as positive and negative numbers. They really enjoyed the game and it was competitive. Next week we will start the discussion about distribution We are reaching the end of the unit and a summative will be coming soon!

The learning goals this week have been:
  1. I am able to question and investigate to find answers.
  2. I am able to clearly communicate using data tables and graphs.
The learning target has been: I can analyze and interpret data to write a conclusion.
Students took their second www.quia.com/web formative assessments today for goal #2 & #3.
  • This week students were introduced to the seasons and focus was on the “Autumnal Equinox.” Ask your student what equinox means?
  • The students critiqued samples of student’s Aerodynamic Lab Reports. Using class discussion the students gave a proficiency score and said why they scored it that way.
  • Corrected their Aerodynamic Engineering Lab reports and re-submitted them.
  • Corrected their Lab Graphs and re-submitted.
  • Took Formative Assessments on www.quia.com/web.
Next week the students will start investigating the wonders of our universe.
THURSDAY we will chat live with NASA Mission to Mars scientists.
If you have any questions or concerns please email me!

We read a short story called "Priscilla and the Wimps" this week in ELA and used it to practice our summarizing skill. Ask your student about the ending--it's a good one! Students constructed their first 'on their own' summary this week over "Priscilla" and practiced giving feedback to a peer during workshop time. They also wrote me a letter reflecting on their reading so far this year, and I am happy to report that we have some readers in our group!

Next week, students will have a summative performance event on summarizing on Tuesday. We'll visit the library on Wednesday and begin learning new ways to respond to our reading on Thursday and Friday.

Please check SIS to see how your student is rating him/herself on participation during workshop time. The score is what students gave themselves, so this is a great talking point! I will be giving a final workshop participation grade for first term next week and will be taking their own perspective on their performance into consideration.

Please email me with any questions or comments!

Math-

7th grade math had a quiz this week over operations with rational numbers. They worked cooperatively in groups with me and even enjoyed a nice game of jeopardy. Today we work to reintroduce turning fractions to decimals and understanding how this works within cab fares. We will be working on converting between fractions, percents and decimals next week.

The learning goals this week have been:
  1. I am able to make qualitative and quantitative observations distinguish the two.
  2. I am able to clearly communicate using data tables and graphs.
The learning target has been: I can graph data precisely.
Students took their first summative assessment today on Goal #1 listed below.
Goal 1:  I am able to make qualitative and quantitative observations and distinguish between the two.
4
In addition to level 3 the I am able to:
  • Consistently differentiate between qualitative and quantitative observations and
justify the use of different types of observations for different situations.
3
I am able to:
  • Make both qualitative and quantitative observations precisely.
  • Accurately distinguish between qualitative and quantitative observations.
2
I am able to:
  • Identify qualitative observations or quantitative observations and is able to make simple qualitative and quantitative observations.
  • Distinguish between the two types of observations inconsistently.
1
Only with guidance is the student able to:
  • Make qualitative and quantitative observations and distinguish between the two.
  • The students spent the whole week becoming better at graphing data. You can ask them to show you the presentation on Google Classroom B Announcement Graphing Presentation which allowed them individually paced learning the concepts and requirements for making graphs.
  • Tuesday in Science Ms Peterson had an active lesson on building a community!
    • The focus was NOT TO tolerate or make it ok to say anything that is a “put down.”
    • “SPEAK WITH KINDNESS”
  • Good topic for you to discuss with your 7th grader!
  • They finished the week by making corrections to their Aerodynamic Engineering Lab graphs.
If you wish to receive the same text message reminders or email reminders your student will be occasionally receiving, please sign up by: 1) sending a text message to 81010 and put in the message as “@c30be”, and/or go to https://www.remind.com/ and enter the classcode: @c30be.
Next week the students will finish the graphing and work on writing a conclusion, plus we will do a fun experiment! Blowing dish washing soap bubbles to measure the best dish soap! Then we will begin studying universe objects.
If you have any questions or concerns please email me!

Social Studies –

Our focus this week has been on The Law Code of Hammurabi.  Students explored the Law Code through a variety of written and multi-media sources.  On Thursday, we honored Constitution Day by looking at the similarities and differences between Hammurabi’s Code and the U.S. Constitution.  Finally, students spent some time imagining that Hammurabi is their principal.

The vocabulary test will be next Wednesday.

Good to Know: We worked on summarizing this week and the difference between essential information and non-essential information. We read an excerpt from Jeanette Walls's The Glass Castle and worked on the different levels of summary responses. Ask your student about the difference between a "Facebook summary" and a "tweet" summary!

Looking Ahead: We will continue this work next week, gradually releasing students to write summaries on their own. We'll be reading "Priscilla and the Wimps" together and eventually move to writing about our own individual reading.

Talk to your student about what he/she is reading!

Math-

This week in class we played Integer Yahtzee. There's some competition on our team! It was great hearing them talking and trying to beat each other. We moved on to reviewing operations with fractions. Next week we will be combining knowledge of fractions with our new integer rules.

Engineering/Inquiry Goal #3 - Data Tables & Graphs Formative Quiz #1
Engineering/Inquiry Formative Goal#2 Investigating to Find Answers
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
When figuring out meanings of words the students should
  1. identify the root word
  2. identify if there is a prefix
  3. identify if there is a suffix
  1. Qualitative observations/data: anything we can experience with our 5 senses and describe with words.
  2. Quantitative observations/data: anything which can be measured or recoreded using numbers.
  3. More trials are better than fewer trials, because the more trials you have the closer the mean is to the actual true value.
  4. Quantitative data is preferred most of the time for different experimenters have measurements closer together, and statistics can be used to better understand the results.

Social Studies –

This week we have moved from geography to looking at the culture of ancient Mesopotamia.  Working in groups, students completed a webquest through the British Museum’s Mesopotamia site.  This allowed them to closely examine artifacts that would be otherwise available to them.  Next week we will be looking at the first written law code and its impact on the U.S. Constitution.
