Important Information:
Permission slips have been
sent home for our trip to the Art Museum on Friday, May 20th.
Please remind students of the following regarding dismissal at the end of the day:
1) students should leave for home, their ride, or a bus at 3:15
2). On after school activity days: If students are participating, they must be in their activity room by 3:20 and should leave for home, their ride, or a bus at 4:00
3). Students are encouraged to walk to the Rec center if their transportation home is not on time and be picked up at the Rec.
We cannot have students unsupervised throughout the building in the late afternoons. It is a critical safety and security issue and student safety comes first.
On Mondays and Fridays students should be picked up by 3:35.
On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays students should be picked up by 4:10.

English –
Students did a great job this week at looking at two "hot topics" and exploring gathering evidence for both sides of the issue. We'll wrap up our last hot topic next week (is technology helping or harming our society?) on Monday.
Argumentative Unit Assessment (Summative Grade)
On Tuesday, students will be presented with an article that corresponds with a pro/con topic that they selected today in class. All article choices present both sides of the issue. Topics include:
Whiel reading, they will put into practice all of the skills they've learned during this unit:
They will take this information that they've gathered and analyze and, on Wednesday, they will write an argumentative piece that asserts which side of the issue made a better argument. They will support this assertion with pieces of evidence from the pieces and explain why the evidence/argument was weak or strong. The students' work on Tuesday and Wednesday will be a summative grade.
On Thursday, we will start our final unit of the year: a whole-class read of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, a personal favorite of mine. It's a very relaxed unit and a nice way to end out 7th grade!

- The media's coverage of NFL issues
- The popularity of the World Cup
- Self-driving cars
- E-cigarette use
- Recycling programs
- School lunch programs
- Online gambling regulations
- Apple's choice to not aid the FBI in hacking the San Bernadino shooter's phone

- reading articles on both sides of an issue critically
- gathering evidence (statistical/factual, anecdotal and expert opinion)
- figuring out what the evidence means (what's being said?)
- asking what the evidence leaves out or neglects to mention (what's NOT being said?)

Social Studies –
This week we began with a group
activity about the barbarian invasions.
Although the common historical focus is on the destruction caused by
these invasions, the groups called “barbarians” by the Romans actually made
several important contributions to the world – including pants. At the end of the week, students began
working on several activities for Chapter 2; a Geo Challenge, a Vocabulary
Activity, and Reading Notes 2. These are
all due on Tuesday.
The notes for this unit are
already up on my website, and I encourage students to begin looking at them
right away.
