1.       If you want to meet with elective teachers, you will need to schedule a conference separate from the team conference. This may require logging into the website a second time.
2.       You should only request a conference with your child’s Discovery teacher.  If your child is off-team for Discovery, special instructions have been emailed to you.

Don't worry about where you're eating dinner on the night of conferences!  Hixson has invited the food trucks from Sarah's Meltdown and Sarah's Cake Stop. Both trucks will be available to purchase food.  You can enjoy your dinner or sweet treat in the cafe and the menu is attached for your review
https://docs.google.com/a/wgcloud.org/file/d/0B47t0_AnyTUhZFB5WEFMTHlmSjg/edit).  Hixson will receive a portion of the funds made by our purchases and we appreciate your support!

English –

Students have been busy writing and reading! Late last week and early this week, students reviewed the structure of a friendly letter by drafting a letter to the teacher about the barriers Jackie Robinson faced and broke through. Students are allowed to revised the letter in order to "perfect" the structure. Some students even reflected on how much more exciting it is to receive a letter by mail rather than an email.

Also this week, students practiced their code-(an)notation while reading an informative article about Jackie's Robinson's nine values. The librarians at Harvard encourage all incoming freshmen to throw their highlighters away and instead use a pen or pencil to code and annotate their readings. Together, Dynamic students have created a code that we use and each student is encourage to refine the code to make it their own for lifelong learning.

Next, students will discover their own idea for writing personal story--narrative essay- of facing a barrier or challenge and how one or more of the values were necessary. Jackie's Nine: courage, persistence, determination, teamework, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, excellence.

On Friday, students will visit the Hixson Book Fair, which will be open through conferences next week.
A reminder that I use http://edmodo.com for posting assignments and resources to support learning and enrichment. The classroom code is mtic65

Math –

Students are at the end of the Comparing & Scaling unit.  In this unit, they learned several methods (ratios, proportion, percents, fractions, rates, difference) for comparing quantities, and they used these methods to solve problems.

Thank you for ordering the math Flippers. They will deliver them Wednesday and students will get them on Thursday.

Social Studies –
We have continued to look at the Roman Republic.  Students are exploring the structure of the Senate and Assemblies and comparing them to the government of the United States.  We also spent some time on Roman art and architecture.  The perfection of easily created concrete allowed the Romans to increase their presence throughout the Mediterranean World.  The students are truly enjoying our Latin Word of the Day, and have started asking me for more.  It’s great to see how excited they are getting over language.
I am available for after school help every Thursday until 4:00 p.m.
