English –
This week students visited the library on Tuesday to browse and check out books. Our next visit is scheduled on April 2; however, students are encouraged to use Discovery time when needed to update their book selections.

Sentence combining continues with changes. Having spent much time working with compound, complex, and simple sentence structures, students are now taking the next steps in developing their writing through sentence combining. In this phase, which begins with the clusters titled "Ancient Struggles," students will make their own decisions about how to combine the set of independent clauses. They are encouraged to add, change, delete and rearrange words and phrases to put their own touch on the content. By doing these steps, students will explore ways to hone their own writing style.

Alongside this work, students are reading and discussing the last texts of the unit on Perseverance. Discussions allow students the opportunity to hone their skills at 1) responding with relevancy, 2) asking clarifying or probing questions, 3) referencing the text (and other reference materials), 4) acknowledging other participants and their ideas. The class is split in half to allow for smaller discussion groups. I learn so much about our text of study from the ideas and questions of my students!

Next week our focus will be on revising and editing our position paper on "Song of the Trees," the personal narrative and the sentence combining paragraph.

Students are always welcome to bring their own digital devices for learning or to access the laptops in the classroom.

Assignments and details are posted to Edmodo.

Science –

This week in Dynamic Science we have put the Disease unit on hold while we prepare for the pig heart dissection on Monday, 8 April by studying the Circulatory/Respiratory system. They completed the “What Do You Know about the Circulatory System at the start of the week. Since then the students watched a over-view video on all the human body systems. The past two days the students have been working independently completing pages of notes on a circulatory system video shared with them on GoogleCloud. The shared video is titled “Human Body Systems- Circulatory System which is about 20 minutes long and gives them 4 pages of notes. There are 21 vocabulary words for this unit which are listed below. Please encourage your student to watch the video at home a few times and any practice you can provide on the vocabulary words would be very helpful!

Social Studies –
Students wrapped up their study of the Roman Republic and Empire this week.  We have continued to look at how the Empire evolved and what impact that evolution had on the citizens of Rome.  Although the study guide was posted on Edline before Spring Break, I gave students a hard copy on Tuesday.  The answers will be posted on Edline and Edmodo Friday evening, as will the notes.  The test will be Monday.  On Tuesday we will begin looking at the beginnings of the Middle Ages – what happens when a totalitarian empire collapses?  We have continued to look at Latin root words – students have requested that I continue this warm-up for the rest of the year – who knew vocabulary could be so fun?
I am available for after school help every Thursday until 4:00 p.m.
