ELA –
This week has been all about getting familiar with the routines in ELA and getting books in the hands of students. We set up our thinkbooks (our class journals), heard lots of great book talks, and spent some time "tasting"books to help us get ready for our first unit: establishing a reading life.
Six word memoirs, our week one activity, were due Friday. Grades will be updated by Monday (completion points only). Students who did not turn in their memoirs still have the opportunity to do so, and their grades will be updated once it is turned in.
Next week, we'll be setting our first reading goal and exploring our reading memories in an effort to get to know ourselves as readers.
Don't forget to stay updated with what's going on in ELA by visiting Ms. K's blog or follow Willow ELA's Instagram page.
Social Studies –
For the past
two weeks in Social Studies, we have been looking at the methods of
history. I have asked students a
question that will recur throughout the year – “How do we know what we know
about the past?” We have been looking at
this question through the lens of Pre-History, which will help students become
familiar with the tools and vocabulary of historians.
Next week will be focused on vocabulary
activities.
Grades will
be updated over the weekend for the Iceman activity and the writing prompt. These will be completion points.
If students
have not yet brought me their Homework for Parents sheet, please help them
remember to do so on Monday.
Information and
assignments for my class can all be found on my website. Please feel free to contact me if you have
any questions.

Science –
What a week in science! The total solar eclipse graced Hixson with a once in a lifetime experience. Students, families, and the community joined together on the field to enjoy the sights.
In class we began by modeling and learning the basics of how and why eclipses happen. After the eclipse students began working on their first design thinking project of the year - paper airplane design. After all of the flights around room 212 - I think I might have a future as an air traffic controller.
Next week we will test our final airplane designs and compete with team Oak, Sequoia, and Monosceros to crown the champion of airplane flight in the 7th grade at Hixson.
