Important Information:
REQUESTING PUMPKIN DONATIONS:
Willow science is looking to have a large variety of pumpkin sizes donated Monday, October 24th, or Tuesday, October 25th. Very small, medium, and large pumpkins are welcomed! On the large side a pumpkin which can easily transported by an adult.
We're collecting box tops! Have students bring them to their first hour class!
After school help sessions and activities began Sept. 6th. At least one teacher from Willow will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00. A list of other after school opportunities can be found here.
T-Shirts Are Here!
We'll be ordering Team Willow shirts this year! Shirts will be $8, and we would like to have shirts ordered by the end of parent-teacher conferences. Please visit this form to place your order today! https://goo.gl/forms/asheaGU5cgJsXeXG3
If you wish to receive the text message reminders or email reminders of homework, please sign up by: 1) sending a text message to 81010 and put in the message as “@hxwillow”, and/or go to https://www.remind.com/ and enter the classcode: @hxwillow.
English –
We had a great week in ELA! We wrote our first personal narratives so that I can see what skills my writers already have in the realm of crafting narratives. On Thursday, we celebrated the National Day on Writing--check out my blog for a full recap!
Next week, we will be generating ideas for realistic fiction through a variety of strategies. This is important work, so I hope my writers come in with their thinking caps on!
Monday is our page goal check-in. Please check with your student this weekend about his/her reading and ask about their progress toward their self-set page goal!

Social Studies –
This week in Social Studies we took a step away from Egypt
for a few days to look at the forthcoming election. Students will be participating in the
KidsVote program and to prepare, they have all filled out voter registration
cards and have been looking up who their representatives are. That assignment is due on Monday, when we
will also be looking at the Electoral College.
On Thursday we graded the second Geo Challenge and the Reading Notes for
Chapter 7. On Friday, we graded the
Vocabulary Activity. The Vocabulary Test
is next Friday and students should use their graded Activity as a study guide.

Math-
Algebra- Had a fun project this week with proportions. We read the book by David M. Schwartz, If you hopped like a frog. Students were then to choose an animal and create proportions for what they would look like, how much they could eat, etc. There were some great projects and visual representations. Check out the blog to see their handiwork!
Check out my blog for some of the great things we've been doing in class.
I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter).

Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
- What is “gravity?”
- What do you know about Elliptical orbits?
- What is the difference between “revolution” and “rotation?”
The targets this week have been:
- I am able to develop and use models to describe the role of gravity.
- Introduced concepts related to seasons.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- Patterns: Observing patterns & events guides organization and classification & leads to understanding of relationships.
- Cause and Effect: Investigating and explaining causal relationships may predict & explain events.
Activities students participated in this week:
- Monday - Worked on graphing relationships between Planet gravity vs Planet Mass and class discussion about the concepts of gravity.
- Tuesday - “Gravity from Newton to Einstein - The Elegant Universe” 9 minute video, working at their own pace, and understanding the relationship between Newton’s mathmatics and Einstein’s Relativity where gravity warps space and time dimensions.
- Wednesday: Introduced the Elliptical shaped orbit concepts and added vocabulary of Orbit, Rotation, and Revolution cause and effects.
- Thursday: Reinforced and added details about elliptical shaped orbit concepts, Rotation, and Revolution cause and effects. Student’s had many questions about gravity during the Q&A portion of class. Once section the questions utilized most of the class period! :) Student also had the opportunity to experiment with Gravity using a link on Google Classroom #009 My Solar System which was lots of fun learning gravity cause & effects!
- Friday: Students created a diagram comparing a circle to an ellipse, and then labeled the diagram for Earth’s location on June 21, September 21, December 21, and March 21.
Goal #2 I am able to develop and use models to describe the role of gravity.

Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
- }Gravity - 1)the attractive force between any objects with mass. 2) Gravity distorts space and time.
- }Rotation (rotate)- spinning on an axis; cause and effect = night and day, 24 hours, Earth and Moon rotate counter-clockwise, CCW.
- }Revolution (revolve) - one object moving around another object; cause and effect = years = 365.25 days
- }Orbit - same as revolution. All the planets and our Moon orbit counter-clockwise.
- }Ellipse - a “lopsided circle” where one edge is much closer to the center, the opposite edge is much further away and the side are in between and equidistant from the center.
- Vocabulary: Axis, Ellipse, Gravity, Orbit, Revolution, and Rotation.
NEXT WEEK the students will continue with Gravity Goal, and collect data on the donated pumpkins for our gravity/solar system experiment on Monday, 31 October.
- How does the mass of the pumpkin affect the time it takes to fall?
- How does the density of the pumpkin affect the depth of the crater?
- How does the diameter of the pumpkin affect the diameter of the crater?
If you have any questions or concerns please email me!
