English –

We spent the week generating ideas for personal narratives in preparation for our realistic fiction pieces! Sometimes, stories from our own lives can inspire wonderful pieces of fiction.

Students set a new page goal on Monday, and their two-week check-in will be on Oct. 24th. Ask your student about what he/she is reading!

Social Studies –

This week in Social Studies, we have been exploring the geography of Egypt.  Students were given time to read Chapter 7, complete Geo Challenge 2, Reading Notes 7, the BrainPop for Egypt, and the Egyptian Vocabulary Activity.  This is a lot of work that will set the stage for our discussions next week – leading to the Egypt Project the following week.
On Wednesday, we also spent time working on some preparation for the Rachel’s Challenge assembly.

Math-
This week students started work on a four fours project, ask your students about it. It's been challenging for them! It will be do next Friday. They have a unit test next Thursday over everything they've done this semester so far.

Algebra- Finished up the last of chapter 2 and will start a project on Monday that they will work on and present next Wednesday. We will start chapter 3 at the end of next week.

Check out my blog for some of the great things we've been doing in class.

I found a nice website, check it out! Sign up for Table Talk Math here! The goal of this site is to provide clarity for what students could be doing to increase their math fluency and also provide prompts to discuss around the dinner table (or anywhere, for that matter)
.

Science –

Willow Science
Here are suggested conversation starters for you young engineer:
  • What is “gravity?”
  • What affects how much gravity an object has or experiences?
  • What is the difference between “mass” and “weight?”
The targets this week have been:
  1. I am able to develop and use models to describe the role of gravity.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
  1. Patterns: Observing patterns & events guides organization and classification & leads to understanding of relationships.
  2. Cause and Effect: Investigating and explaining causal relationships may predict & explain events.
Activities students participated in this week:
  1. Monday - Notes and class discussion about the concepts of gravity.
  2. Tuesday - Reinforced gravity concepts and reviewed graphing skills
  3. Wednesday: ½ day - Journaled to prepare for Rachel’s Challenge Assembly. What are one or two activities you or your school can do that would make the biggest impact on improving the culture at your school?
  4. Thursday: Rachel’s Challenge Assembly 1st and 2nd periods. Class discussion over what needs to be changed about our school culture to demonstrate more of BEING KIND?
  5. Friday: NO SCHOOL
Goal #2 I am able to develop and use models to describe the role of gravity.
4
I demonstrate innovation, in depth inference(s), or advanced application(s) with the learning goal.  In addition to level 3 I am able to:
  • critique models to demonstrate understanding of role of gravity in the universe.
3
I am be able to:
  • explain motions of specific objects in the universe and solar system in terms of gravity.

Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
  1. }Gravity - 1)the attractive force between any objects with mass. 2) Gravity distorts space and time.
  2. }What affects the amount of Gravity? - two things which determine the amount of gravity: 1) the greater the mass the greater the gravity 2) the closer the distance, the greater the gravity.
  3. }Mass - the amount of matter in an object
  4. }Weight - a measurement of the amount of gravity on an object.
  5. }Mass vs Weight - mass is measured on a balance and gravity is measured on a scale. On the Moon or Earth - Mass doesn’t change but your weight will be ⅙ on the Moon vs Earth.
NEXT WEEK the students will continue with Gravity Goal and using graphing to better see the relationships gravity effects.
