This week students are planning, drafting and revising a personal essay. The essay follows the guidelines put forth by the popular NPR show "This I Believe." Students looked at models to determine characteristics of personal essays, discussed how to use stories to demonstrate a belief and finally generate ideas for their own belief statement for the essay.

On Thursday, students will take their Fall Reading Assessment-- the SRI (scholastic reading inventory). The assessment measures students fluency and vocabulary and is used to help guide teachers in providing supports for students' reading. The score that is generated is useful in guiding students to "just-right books"-- within the reading range. However, a student's interest is the number one factor for whether a book is "just right."

Math- We took a break from the last unit of the year (Comparing & Scaling) to review for the MAP test. Now students have completed and graded the assessments for this unit. For the reminder of the year, students will learn an eighth grade concept (slope). Grades are updated, please check the parent portal.

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students have started the Genetics unit activities. The vocabulary is below. You may find them asking more questions about their heredity.
Allele
Asexual reproduction
Chromosomes/ Genes/DNA
Dominant
Genotype
Heredity
Heterozygous
Homozygous
Phenotype
Recessive
Sexual reproduction

The students have also expressed an increased awareness of proper nutrition. There was an emphasis of good nutrition and healthy eating to prevent cardiovascular disease. If you find your student asking for healthy snacks or you may suggest more healthy snacks, you may find them much more receptive!

If you have any questions or comments please let me know.

Social Studies –

Students are continuing their path through the Middle Ages.  This week we focused on The Black Death and the Magna Carta – both of which helped bring about the end of feudalism.  In addition, elements of the Magna Carta were lifted directly to form parts of the U.S. Constitution.  Next week, we will turn our attention to the Crusades and the three major religions involved in that series of wars.

After school help is available in my room every Tuesday until 4:00
