Late last week students worked in small groups to discuss the difference between justice and revenge in preparation for a reading of A.B. Guthrie's short story "Bargain." EArly this week, students drafted plotlines (or timelines) to support their comprehension of the story. Alongside this work, students were involved in word study and received a crossword puzzle to help them review for a small quiz next week over the vocabulary words from "Bargain" and "A Mason-Dixon Memory."
On Thursday, the students participated in a conversation to get them thinking about the themes within "Bargain": justice vs. revenge and "do the right thing (the unit theme)." Conversations were lively as students had many reasons for whether or not they would turn in the protagonist for the death of the antagonist.
Math-
The MAP testing is finally over! Dynamic students did a good job focusing while taking the tests. Prior to the test we deviated from the Comparing & Scaling unit, so we could cover some of the concepts that was not in of our units. Next week, we will finish and start the assessments for the Comparing & Scaling unit.
Grades on the next process report will be the same as the 4th term, because we had not finished the assessments for our current unit by the end of 5th term. Grades will be updated in about two weeks.

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students have been continuing to
study the circulatory and respiratory system. Most of the students are feeling
there are lots of parts to the heart and are working to be able to describe the
path of the blood. The concept of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is coming
into their vocabulary! Next Tuesday, in order to practice some dissection
skills the students will be dissecting an earthworm.
On Wednesday, 16 April is the Dynamic field trip to the Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education Lab at St. Louis University to participate in the ADVENTURES IN MEDICINE and SCIENCE (AIMS) program to do a pig heart dissection. This is a top notch, state of the art dissection lab! The students will also see a comparison of a healthy human heart compared to a diseased human heart.
We have about 29 lab groups for the SLU pig heart dissection lab and we have 7 parents whom have volunteered to supervise this field trip. (Thank you to Lisa Gilbert, Abby Marshall, Mary Niemira, Kim Richardson, Kim Schultz, Peggy Smegner, Jenny Gupta-Trampe!) It is best if we had 1 adult to every 2 labs groups, which means we need about 7 more parent supervisors.
If you can volunteer to supervise this field trip, please send me an e-mail! daniels.mark@wgmail.org. Parent supervisors should meet us at SLU at 12:20 and we will finish the lab before 2:00.

Social Studies –
This
week we have been continuing our look at The Middle Ages. Students spent time with castles and siege warfare. We finished the week with a look at the
development of towns and the rise off the middle class. Next week, students will be working on their
project for this unit, a R.A.F.T. (Role, Audience, Format, Topic). Students will choose from a variety of options
to customize their project. I gave each
a hard copy of the grid on Thursday, but it can also be found on my website
under the Unit Resources menu.
After school help is available in my room every Tuesday until 4:00
