Welcome to the Willow Weekly. Here you will find all of your Team Willow news and information. Please sign up for automatic updates and you will be notified whenever an update is made.
Please remind your students to charge their Chromebook every night! We have had many students come to class with dead Chromebooks, which slows down instruction. Thank you!
Important Information:
After school help sessions and activities are after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until 4:00. At least one teacher from Willow will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00. A list of other after school opportunities can be found here.
February 8th and 9th NNAT and algebra placement test will be given to 7th grade students.
Team T-shirts will be passed out next week!

English –
I was so pleased to see that several students met our shared goal of writing 900 words this week about our books (I even managed to write 900 as well!). We have moved from doing creative jots into writing long about our books to explain our thinking and to also discover new thinking about what we read--as some of you know, sometimes, we don't know WHAT we think until we write!
This week, we have been talking about more ways to write about our reading to show deeper thinking about what we read. Students have generated plenty of ideas for aspects of their book they could write about, but I've posted some resources on Google Classroom for those who are stuck and aren't sure what to write about.
I'll be checking in with students on Monday to see their progress, and meeting their goal is part of the summative workshop participation grade I'll be adding into the gradebook next week.
Moving forward, we'll be turning the longer writes into a companion book, a book with chapters that show off our deeper thinking about the novel the student has chosen to delve deeper into--think of a 'book about a book.'
Our word count goal for next week will be 600 new words about their reading.

Math-
Algebra- finished up chapter 6 and took their test. Students have seen their grade, this is the last test they will be allowed to reassess. We are starting chapter 7 exponent rules.
7th Math- Students are working on identifying proportional relationships in graphs and tables. They had a formative over learning target 2 and will have their learning target 3 formative soon. They will have their first test over learning targets 1-3 in two weeks. Next Wednesday and Thursday all 7th grade students not currently in algebra will be taking the NNAT and algebra placement tests. Students who would like to know what they can do to study or prepare can always look at the algebra 1 content on khan academy.

Science –
Here are suggested conversation starters for your young engineer:
- In science what did you see in the microscopes?
- What did you find most interesting?
- What did the newspaper print look like magnified?
- Goal 1: I understand that living organisms are systems of interacting subsystems composed, on the most basic level, of cells.
- Goal 2: I am able to develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
- See Proficiency Scales for these goals below.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- Scale, Proportion, and Quantity: Changes in scale, proportion, or quantity affect a system’s structure and/or performance.
- Systems and System Models: Defining systems and system models are ways to understand & test ideas.
- Structure and Function: The way in which an object or living thing is shaped & its substructures determine many of its properties and functions.
Activities students participated in this week:
- Monday - Introduced microscopes and began practicing use of microscopes with “e” Lab.
- Tuesday - Demonstrated procedure for setting a slide up on the microscope as well as show expectations for the microscope setup procedure lab skills test. Began Lab testing students.
- Wednesday - Students finished “e” Lab activity and worked on Plant and Animal Venn diagram as microscope lab skill tests were underway.
- Thursday - Students should have finished and corrected the Plant/Animal Venn diagram and worked on the MicroWhat? Microscope Lab.
- Friday - Finished MicroWhat? Microscope lab activity and continued microscope use to investigate sample of their choosing.
Emphasis this week:
- }Structure and Function of the cell parts and what defines something as “LIVING.”
- Vocabulary: Cell membrane, Cell wall, Chloroplasts, Chromosomes, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria, Nucleus, Organelle
NEXT WEEK the students finish microscope work, practice developing proficiency with structure and function of cell vocabulary, and receive Cell Summative project instructions.
