English –
We wrote some fabulous first pieces this week in ELA! Check out my blog post about our first Author's Chair session today to see some of your students' wonderful, profound pieces: blog.katiekraushaar.com
Next week, we'll be doing an on-demand writing assessment on Monday, so I asked students to think of one small moment from their summer break OR the first week of school to write about in class. This is a low-stakes pre-assessment to see where my students are at with focused, descriptive writing.
The remainder of the week will be spent getting books in hands and talking about reading--one of my favorite topics!

Social Studies –
We began this school year with a look at the question How Do We
Know What We Know? We will be looking at
Otzi the Iceman, and the ways in which our knowledge of pre-history has
increased through study of this individual.
Next week, we will continue with pre-history.

Science –
Welcome to Willow Science!
During the first week of science class the learning goal has been:
I am developing my observation skills.
I am developing using “Inductive Reasoning” skills.
The cross-cutting concept have been:
- “Patterns: Observing patterns and events guides organization and classification and leads to understanding of relationships.”
The two habits of mind we were developing are #8) Gathering Data Through All Senses and #10) Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
Vocabulary Emphasis this week:
- “Inductive reasoning” is using all your observations and evidence to make a prediction where you have at least a 60% chance of being correct.
Activities students participated in this week:
- Developing good habits with Science classroom procedures.
- Practicing observational skills and identifying patterns.
- Making predictions using inductive reasoning.
Next week the students will be:
- completing learner inventories: Habits of Mind, Thinking Styles and Intelligence Types (Linguistic, Visual/Spatial, Logical-mathematical, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Musical, Kinesthetic, Naturalist, & Existential), Triarchic Intelligences (Analytical, Creative, & Practical), and Learning Modality Preferences (Visual, Auditory, and Tactile/Kinesthetic).
- Complete a Research Process Pretest
- Began an Aerodynamic Engineering Lab - prototyping and testing paper airplanes designs.
