Good Afternoon Dynamic Team!

Upcoming Events:    Feb. 2nd - Career Fair

DYNAMIC is to be CONTINUOUSLY PRODUCTIVE AND CONTINUOUSLY LEARNING!

Important Information:

Hixson Middle School Attendance to Junior Achievement Career Fair

Our school was accepted to participate in the Junior Achievement Middle School Career Fair.
Hixson Middle School 7th grade students will be traveling to the Moolah Shrine located at 12545 Fee Fee Road St. Louis, MO 63146 on Tuesday, February 2 for this field trip. As part of the guidance counseling curriculum career lessons will be delivered to students prior to the field trip by our grade level counselors and interns.

We will leave Hixson at 9:55 am and depart from the career fair at 12:15 pm. Due to the field trip overlapping with our Hixson lunch times each team will be making arrangements to eat at school upon their return.

Please let us know if you have any questions or need further clarification about this experience prior to Friday, January 29.

If you DO NOT WISH for your child to attend this event, please click here to download the form.

At least one teacher from Dynamic will be available for help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:00.

English –
Students have been working hard on thinking and rethinking strategies and methods for responding to their reading in writing. This informational unit all hinges on your student's self-selected book, so check in with your student on his/her reading progress! Our first page goal check-in is on Monday, January 25th. As a reminder, grades are calculated on a proficiency scale. Students receive a three (90-95%) for achieving their reading goal and actively participating in class. To attain the 4 (95-100%), students must participate in the above-and-beyond activities, such as completing a book project (options here) and/or by regularly participating in writing invitations (extended on Google Classroom). Students must submit these above-and-beyond requirements to me prior to the 25th to be considered for the 4!

Math-
This week in math, the few days we had, we talked more in depth about scale factor and similar figures. We had an activity today where we watched a clip of Zoolander and talked about a scale model and how he was mistaken and how many times bigger the school building should be to make it a functioning school building.  We should be finishing up our unit this next week. Be on the lookout for a test soon!

Social Studies –

This has been an abbreviated week in Social Studies.  Career Fair lessons were held by the counselors in our room on Tuesday.  Students were able to take a look at some choices and narrow their focus in preparation for the Career Fair Field Trip on February 2nd.   Due to the snow day, our work with Athens and Sparta didn’t begin until Thursday.  We will continue looking at these two cites next week.

Please ask your students to share the words they are learning as we explore Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Science –
Dynamic Science!
The learning goals this week have been:
  1. Goal 1:    Student understands that living organisms are systems of interacting subsystems composed, on the most basic level, of cells.
4
Student demonstrates innovation, in depth inference(s), or advanced application(s) with the learning goal. In addition to level 3 the student will be able to:
  • predict the effect(s) on an organism if a specific subsystem or cell does not function properly or does not exist.
3
Student will use
  • cell theory
and
  • levels of organization
to show that an organism is living.

  1. Goal 2:  Student develops and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
4
Student demonstrates innovation, in depth inference(s), or advanced application(s) with the learning goal. In addition to level 3 the student will be able to:
  • create an analogy between cell and non-cell.
3
Student will develop and use a model to
  • describe the function of a cell as a whole.
  • describe the function that each organelle contributes in the cell.  (cell wall, nucleus, chloroplast, mitochondria, cell membrane).

  1. Goal 3:  Student gathers and synthesizes information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories.
  • Cross-Cutting Concepts
    • Systems and System models: Defining systems and system models are ways to understand ideas/concepts.
    • Scale, Proportion, and Quantity: Changes in scale, proportion, or quantity affect a system’s structure and/or performance.
    • Structure and Function: The way in which an object or living thing is shaped & its substructures determine many of its properties and functions.

  • Students have been working on knowing and understanding “Cell Theory” and “6 Characteristics of Living” things. I have been reviewing with the students their note taking skills and organization.
  • Thursday Nurse Neuman came into class and students did a presentation and class discussion on the Immune System cells -  Macrophages (B-cells & T-cells) and vaccines, and Formative Assessment on Cell Theory and Characteristics of Living things. You will see those scores posted before next Tuesday.
  • Friday students were put into random groups to become experts on the structure and function of their organelle or cell part/process. The group will teach the class about their topic on Monday.

Next week the students will do their presentations and dig into levels of organization of complex organisms.
If you have any questions or concerns please email me!
