Library
An e-mail notice was
sent to parents and students regarding unpaid library fines and fees for lost
books. While all library fines should be paid as soon as possible, the wording
of the notice is confusing, indicating that all students who receive the e-mail
have lost books. If a student has a book which is so overdue that it has been
marked lost, it will be designated Library LM (Lost Material) and the cost of
the book will be given. Lines marked Overdue indicate the book is back, but it
had been brought back late and was accessed a fine. Please e-mail or contact
Mrs. Williams (918-4568) or Mrs. Hartmann (918-4649) in the library if
you have questions. Thank you.
Summer School
The
Hixson Summer School Program offers academic courses and workshops that meet
the special interests and needs of students. We hope you will find the Summer
Program offers an opportunity for students to grow intellectually and
personally. Summer learning maintains skills, takes a step beyond, and
stretches the imagination. The journey begins with registration.

The SIS Portal is being updates daily to support communication with both students and parents about students' assignments and grades. Students who need extra support from me, should make plans to talk with me during Discovery or at 8:10 am.
This week students are watching the movie "Brians Song" Alongside their viewing, they are comparing and contrasting our reading of the teleplay to the film version. Most students are noticing many similarities as well differences. These notes are recorded in a graphic organizer to be used during our discussion after the movie.
Math- The Car Report was turned in today. I'll have them graded by the end of next week which will be their final grade for the year. By doing this report, I wanted students to learn how math is applied to a real life situation. Next week, students will do complex math problems to determine who will win the "Board of Fame" savings bonds.

Science –
This week in Dynamic Science students have been working on
the Cell Unit. They will have an assessment on Wednesday, 21 May. The learning targets
and vocabulary are listed below. Several of the learning goals they came into
this unit with most of the skills in place.
1.
I am able to describe how cells are the smallest unit of
living organisms.
2.
I am able to describe each of the jobs of these organelles:
cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, chromosomes, cytoplasm, mitochondria,
& nucleus.
3.
I am able to compare and contrast photosynthesis and
cellular respiration.

I am able to describe the levels of organization within
complex organisms.

I am able to compare and contrast plant and animal cells.

Social Studies –
We
are currently looking at the medieval kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and
Songhai. Students have been learning
about the trade in salt and gold, and about the traditions of oral history and
griots. On Wednesday and Thursday,
students became griots and participated in some dramatic storytelling of their
own - which was AMAZING. They did such a great job! The Study Guide for the Middle Ages
Unit is posted on my website. We went
over the Study Guide answers on May 16th, after which I posted the
answers on my website. The test will be
May 20th.
All
late work for Social Studies was accepted until May 16th at 3:15.
